I found the furlough claim easy and without glitches whilst doing it. I am still waiting to hear from the local council re the grant. I am now worried that I may have a problem with that if others have already had the grant paid.i spoke to them a couple of days after the announcement and they said I’d receive details though the mail. I get the feeling both were designed / organised 'in house' - although I'm not sure. But I've always found HMRC far more user-friendly than other government sites. It's when they farm stuff out to the likes of Crapita that it all goes wrong.

They originally said June, so I genuinely believe in May. With the wages system up and running, their IT people will be working 24/7 on the self employed version.

So how long we reckon this will go on for

My guess, no more informed than anyone else:

- Mid May, all small shops can reopen, with the mandatory 2m rule to be observed. As well as beaches and possibly outdoor gardens eg National Trust, Wakehurst.

- Then Public Heath and other scientists to gauge the success or not of that. If a sizeable proportion of the public take the p, which wouldn’t be a surprise with the British, then the initial reopening could be reversed.

- June, if a success, then other sectors in stages e.g. DIY stores, larger stores. With the 2m rule. Behind closed doors football.

- September for schools.

- Travel, hotels, holidays, is anyone’s guess, hopefully soon for the likes of you relying on that for income.

- August 2022, attendance at PL matches.

Yes, wouldn’t the UC claim be by his Mum as the head of household? She can’t have savings of £16,000 or more, but another NSC’er told us that he ignored that rule in the recent past and got away with it (I wouldn’t, as HMRC/DHSS get data from the banks). Their might be other benefits available to her.

He should claim Job Seekers Allowance.

Had a letter yesterday saying I should expect to be furloughed until the end of June at least. Did seem to be a bit of a cover all with the option of being recalled early but a bit of a reality check. I'm very lucky in that 80% of my wage will be fine for all bills and a few distraction purchases. But more of a worry about the long term future of the company as they still have costs. Given that leisure centres and gyms were mentioned directly, we have no choice and I am not sure whether they will want to open them for moral or keep them closed as a risk, Quite a few centres being used for food distribution or reserved for more sombre purposes if required so might be required to stay closed for longer.

I personally think it will be cut to some degree for some businesses that can open and operate and be extended for others.

No way the Government can afford to extend it to everyone until August so I agree. Non essential shops are likely to be allowed to open soon which will open up supply chain companies. Bars and restaurants are likely to be last and there will probably be a range in between.

Feel a bit of a fraud staying at home but not sure what to do for the best. I would happily help farmers harvest but my back is likely to allow that for 5 minutes. Loads of others are helping the NHS and as I am on medication for Hypertension, I am probably better off staying in. Besides which, my allergies have been playing up pretty much since this started and I can be prone to coughing fits. I always take my temperature before venturing out but nobody else knows that.

I just made my first 'furlough claim' through HMRC online, for a client. I avoided the first day yesterday, to allow for the stampede to pass.

It took just 10 minutes to gather the information they require, then another 10 to logon and make the claim. At the moment you claim for say March and April, then May's once we're in it, similarly for June.

Surprisingly, a very simple and user-friendly portal. It did briefly crash three times saying "bad data", I think only because I'd left the screen to check some facts (it was too sensitive), whereupon you simply login again and you find that most of your data's been saved.

Rating 9/10

Money to hit bank accounts within 6 business days of the claim, purportedly.

HMRC paid the full claim amount into my client's bank account 7 days later. I'm pleased with the efficiency of the scheme.

Surprised by this, although I wonder if it will be increasingly more onerous for someone to be applicable.

I doubt if my employers business will pick up for several months. If the furlough scheme ends the two directors of the franchise will happily sack staff if they are surplus, at least this way they can take back some staff incrementally if business improves. Otherwise I'd probably be looking for a job ( I am anyway but there is naff all except supermarket and care work ) almost immediately the furlough ended. No way would my bosses pay me 100% of my salary if I'm only working at 30% capacity.
