...recent outbreak which has seen 275 confirmed cases of E. coli (STEC) O145 across the UK, as of 25 June. Data from 249 cases shows 49% were admitted to hospital.

The outbreak is thought to be caused by some supermarket sandwiches containing salad leaves.
Pre-packed sandwiches containing lettuce are the likely source of the outbreak.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have published precautionary recall notices covering a range of products potentially contaminated with E. coli.

Samworth Brothers and Greencore Group recalled a range of products sold at a variety of retailers, such as Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Boots, Co-op, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s.

Full list of SKUs recalled, where each of them is sold and the 'use-by' date on the last affected batch.

I presume symptoms show sharply after consumption?
I genuinely had a Coronation chicken sandwich that included leaves of some sort, from Tesco a few days ago, thankfully it's not on the Tesco list or I might be royally clucked.

Symptoms include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and occasionally fever. About half of people with the infection will have bloody diarrhoea. People usually notice symptoms 3 to 4 days after they have been infected. But symptoms can start any time between 1 and 14 days afterwards.

Why don't people make their own sandwiches? It's far safer. Can we really trust the supermarkets when mass producing things like this? Hand cut doorsteps with a chunk of cheddar and Branston, does it get much better?
How can you trust the Branston and cheddar and bread, also all mass produced…?

Not really, it’s weeks old and no such sandwiches exist in the supply chain. People made ill happened weeks ago now. You’re fine eating any and have been for some time.

It is very very unpleasant. I had 20odd years ago and was really ill. Being young and fit I was ok, but only after a week and easy to see how kills old and vulnerable people. You get contacted by the Env H Agency and have to fill out lots of documents, not allowed back to work in food industry for several more weeks etc etc.

Good question, but I have never heard of anyone getting really ill on any of those items.
E. coli is not choosy. That was my point really. All foods and any foods affected.

Altogether now..

'You should have (or 'of' if you're pig ignorant) dodged the salad'
We did a family holiday to Mexico a few years ago. I was the only one who ate loads of salad from the all-inclusive……and I was the only one who brought back cyclosporiasis (eventually diagnosed after I insisted on a test after 3 weeks of being unable to leave the house)

To be fair it's not just the salad

Harmful E coli bacteria have been found at very high levels at Henley, days before elite rowers compete in the international regatta there.

Water quality testing in the Henley Mile, part of the regatta course outside the Oxfordshire town, has revealed mean levels of 1,213 E coli colony forming units (CFU) per 100ml of water, across 27 tests. Where E coli levels are above 900 CFU/100ml, the water quality is deemed poor, according to bathing water designations, and is a threat to public health.

The highest reading recorded by campaigners from River Action reached 25,000 CFU/100ml, more than 27 times the acceptable limit for bathing water. The second highest reading was 8,001 CFU/100ml of water.

As a result of the testing, Henley Royal Regatta organisers are warning the 4,000 elite rowers to protect themselves from sickness and infection from the water. Rowers are being advised to cover cuts and to avoid swallowing splashes of river water.
