A mate of mine used to go to Hove and bet on any of the dog handlers, or whatever the people that hold their leads as they're paraded around are called, that he FANCIED.

He subquently developed a serious and intractable gambling problem which led to him pissing away his entire inheritance in a matter of months before the bailiff's letters started arriving. So this system may not have been entirely flawless. I thought it only fair to warn.

I never bet on favourites for horses or greyhounds because my philosophy is that if they don't win you won't be disappointed (unless they lost by a narrow margin). Bookies tend to underestimate chances of nags between 6/1 - 14/1 and with dogs 7/2 - 6/1. They study the favourites very carefully meaning they'll always be value elsewhere because they've been overlooked.

It's better to get one winner at big odds rather than two or three at cramped odds.

Quote: Always found dog racing a bit of a lottery.

there is the age old advice though: if you see a dog have a dump just before the race, put money on that .... (the dog, not the turd)

They'll be lighter...

I'm heading to the dogs tonight for a staff do, and i have absolutly no idea on how good the dogs are and just generally bet on names, which didn't work at all last time i went there.

I don't generally bet loads, and i'm not planning to tonight, but does anyone have any tips on what to look for in terms of form etc. on the cards.

Is it all just luck? or Is there some skill involved?

Any help would be appreciated.

Um, prob too late to be of any use tonight, but on the off-chance it isn't...

Buy the Argus. Place one of your bigger bets of the night on their NAP (i.e best bet of the night) choice. Ditto on their NB (next best bet of the night) choice. Back their *** (three star) choice to win every race and you'll pick up a good few winners. You won't make a fortune that way, but always nice to pick a winner eh?

I came back with 4/5 winning bets over the night, which meant my betting didn't cost a thing as i broke even. The only thing that cost me was the drink, which there was a hell of a lot.

For one race i went back to my old way of betting based on the name, well it was call Malabay Logan, which i put £5 on and it won.

Had a bit of fun, but my excitement did dwindle towards the end and i think that 12 races in an evening is too much and i wasn't even watching the races at the end, but i know it's all about them making more money.

Used to live 100yds from the track in Nevill Ave .
Starting going there from the age of 10 .
If its been raining heavily back the wide runners ( w )
in the ouside traps . The ground is firmer out wide ,
the inside gets cut up and turns into a bog .

A few years ago that would have been a good shout. But since they've removed the grass straights and made it an all sand track it has removed the advantage for the outside runners in the wet.

Seconded, though I always end up placing a few bets based solely on the name towards the end of the night when the cider's kicking in. :drunk:
