I must admit getting a bit peeved about the media forever talking about variants. All viruses vary over time, its what they do.

But, a variant doesn't mean the vaccines fall over a cliff and do not work entirely. As people have shown, in posts above - for even the SA version. I thought the goal was to stop people being so ill and ending up in hospital and dying. All the vaccines do this. Ok, some might be weaker and it might mean you have a few rough days, but I think we would have taken that a year ago.

Obviously, we need to keep a watch for something that doesn't just vary, but changes into a different strain entirely. But, I think we are away off that and yearly booster, like the flu jab may ward that off.

Btw, having my Novavax jab today - 3 of 4 (two placebo, two actual vaccine)

Just 32 vaccinated people were hospitalised with Covid-19 in recent months, according to “extraordinary” real world data showing the effectiveness of Britain’s jabs programme.

The figure represents a tiny fraction of the more than 74,000 people admitted to hospital with the virus during the time period examined in the study.

Scientists are preparing to hand findings to the Government’s advisers on Thursday, showing the dramatic impact of first doses on hospitalisations and deaths.

32 out of 74,000 is 0.043% - absolutely remarkable.

The article is behind a paywall so I can’t see the full details, but do you know how they are defining “vaccinated”? Presumably we’re talking both doses (asking purely for context, not in any way to detract from this very significant good news)?

Nope....it’s even better

The findings were particularly remarkable because they related to those given just one jab, he said, with ongoing studies examining the level of protection achieved by two doses.

My understanding is the definition given is "21 days (and beyond) after first dose".
