This would be absolutely extraordinary if true as it would mean that Omicron is 29% less deadly than the original wild type Covid from 2019, which was the least virulent of the lot.

Beat me to it.

Couple of bits of good news

That should counter some of the 23% loss on the decrease on two jabs.

Exactly. I am not quite allowing myself to get properly excited about this, but it's bubbling under the surface as it could turn out so much better than the doommongers have us believe.

It seems quite a few are only noticing they are positive is when they have to test to go into hospital or do something else

Which hopefully backs up it’s mild

Possibly spreading way faster than even the worst data indicates, but so mild the majority are asymptomatic perhaps...........really key 2-3 weeks coming up in terms of what happens to our numbers

It's worth highlighting this section of the excellent twitter discussion in Bozza's comment #8371:

Data as of Dec 9, suggests cases in SA are flattening off, and in the Gauteng region, they may have even peaked already.

Pfizer on Tuesday said final analysis of its antiviral Covid-19 pill still showed near 90% efficacy in preventing hospitalizations and deaths in high-risk patients.

note this is antiviral treatment, not the vaccine.

One of my mates is self isolating and has pledged to work his way through 30 recent films and he's a going to let me know which ones he thinks I might like and which ones are crap (which may well be the same films).

If it's only 30% less deadly I think we are in trouble cos it seems to be massively more transmissible than any other strain (2x)

According to the latest study in SA there are 38 admissions per 1,000 Omicron cases, compared to 101 per 1,000 for Delta - and that’s in a country where only 25% are double-vaccinated, compared to around 80% here so for double-vaccinated people the hospitalisation rate with Omicron is probably circa 5% and the death rate negligible.

You are forgetting that the subsequent variants after the wild type virus, were much more lethal. The 29% figure relates to the original virus.

Ok fingers crossed then. Serious commentators still keeping their powder dry with predictions on this one.

I think it's wise to exercise caution. Francois Balloux got his fingers burned badly the other day through hopeful impatience.

Still, it's great that there are hopeful signs!
