Loved that cafe. Tiny, cramped, cheap, convenient, felt like you'd gone back in time.

She was a right miserable cow mind, but that was part of the charm. I remember being in there once and it was started pissing down outside she said "Good, it's raining, everyone will get wet".

I was discussing this cafe with some mates the other day, and we all agreed it was probably the best place in town for food, value and 'ambience'. It seems people have tried to make a go of the place since the old couple packed it in, but it never quite takes off...

It was was like walking into a set from The League Of Gents! Bloody brilliant place & ALWAYS had me in stitches: thanks to that life-long 'Domestic' behind the counter.

Was it between 12 & 2pm when you couldn't just order a cup of splosh without having food? I remember the, ahem, proprietor pointing at the notice on the wall & bluntly stating : "what does that say?" when some unsuspecting punter made the fatal mistake of failing to order a plate of greasy grub with their instant coffee.

Marvelous (& greatly missed) scenes.

Food was great, tea was shit! I always used to take my own tea bag and add it to the little pot they gave you. It was the size of the menu that always impressed me as well. I don't know any other greasy spoon with such a huge menu.

She also went mental if anyone dared to go in with a buggy or push chair. "Does it look like we've got room for that???"

Thanks to you, I've just spat my warm beverage all over my keyboard.

ps You're spot-on about that menu, forkie. Completely bewildering array of combinations which invariably provoked a resentment in the kitchen area which was directly proportional to the number of ingredients. Brilliant!

"He wants a cup of tea, John"
"Tell 'im he can't 'ave it!"

Customer slinks out of cafe totally humiliated.

Loved the place!
