Always thought Phil Tufnell was The Cat due to his catnap abilities in the changing room before hanging in there for a plucky six or seven runs when batting at eleven as England subsided to yet another defeat? :lolol:

Oh my goodness, what a shat day

Out of respect, can we NOT have an explanation of why he was known as " The Cat " ?

Because he used to shit in his neighbours garden or was it that he could lick his own bollox ?

RIP Peter Bonetti

Me too. Mine were just thin cotton that now you’d take for gardening gloves. When dry they were worse than bare hands but they came into their own on a wet day.

Wow, is this the worst day ever for celebrity deaths?

Edit just seen on the Argus site that he was a part time Albion coach, I never knew that

Dave Sexton connection? Dave live in Hove and a son went to my school.

Had to check as I was only 99% sure but Keith Newton played for Everton in 1970 (transferred mid-season prior to the World Cup Finals)

At the end of my tether
Peter Bonetti .... what a goalkeeper! He was rightly nicknamed "the cat" , he was the most athletic shot stopper I have ever seen. Gordon Banks did it by reading the game and having a sixth sense to position himself, Bonetti was just so quick to react and hurl himself at a ball to collect it.
I was surprised to see today that he only won seven England caps . Any other era he would have been a mainstay.
Yes, a Sussex family.... He may be gone but certainly not forgotten.

Bloody Worthing!
I did the same the other day. Worthing family and his brother was a decent player as well. He was one of the first goalkeepers to wear specialist gloves and my first pair of keepers gloves were a pair of his branded gloves.

I remember seeing his brother play for Worthing (or possibly Sussex) schools at Woodside Road many years ago. I think the family had a business in Findon Valley at one point. Peter ended up being a postman in the Scottish Islands. (Not a job you'd imagine any of the current crop of Prem 'keepers doing.)

Dry cleaners on Cissbury Parade. Still there as far as I can remember.

My goodness, that looks like a good side. There were - and probably still are - some with the view that it was a stronger side than the 1966 one which of course had home advantage and played all their games at Wembley.

I had his dictionary when i was at school - hark back to the time when you used to put your name on a list in the front of your school text books so you could be held accountable for loss or damage.

There were also some who thought we were very lucky to win it in 66, (l wasn't one of them though).

Certainly though, home advantage, and playing all our games at Wembley, was a massive help.
