In your opinion what game is the biggest english derby?

The steel city derby between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United is always a good one to watch IMO but i wouldnt say it was the biggest.

I disagree, i'd say Derby COUNTY, they're the biggest Derby i can think of...

has to be the Merseyside derby, doesnt matter how good the teams, where they are in the Leauge or how many foriegners in their teams, they desend to a pub match kicking lumps out of each other.

I don't rate Arsenal vs Tottenham its always been a bit of a shit derby also Everton v Liverpool aint up to much. I would say Portsmouth vs Southampton and Millwall vs West Ham are much more intense games.

Can't believe no-one's mentioned the Liverpool vs ManUre derby.

That is really unpleasant....mocking the Munich Air and Hillsborough disasters takes it to a different (lower) level!!!

The two biggest names in English footy and 2 of the 6/7 biggest in all of Europe, all the history on and off the field, the immense rivalry between the two cities a la Pompey / Saints.

Stand alone winner for me.

Can't believe so much discussion has taken place without defining biggest? :wozza: do we mean:
-Closest geographically?
-Most violent / most arrests?
-Most famous?
-Hardest to get tickets for?
-Longest lasting?
-Best atmosphere?

I agree, how do you analyse it.

FWIW, I don't think that same city derbys (e.g Liverpool/Everton or United/Citeh, Wednesday/United) are the most intense. The reason is that who you support is largely a matter of choice rather than where exactly you live. So your friends and family might be on the other side of the divide which takes some of the feeling out of it. (Rangers Celtic is an exception to this rule because it's a religion thing).

I think the biggest derbies (in terms of the passions stirred) are those where the two clubs are very close but have their own distinct territories. So Soton/Portsmouth, Norwich/Ipswich, Burnley/Blackburn, West Brom/Wolves.

I genuinely don't think it's about the size of the crowd. As someone else said, Mansfield and Chesterfield really matters - partly because of the history of the miners' strike.

Also a derby matters most when there's ONE standout club you really dislike. Man Utd have three grudge matches with City, Liverpool and Leeds so that has to dilute it a bit.

Based on all this - I'd vote for Sunderland - Newcastle - they're only 20 miles or so apart I think but no one brought up in either city would dream of supporting the other. Neither of them has any other significant rival and they both have core support which is as intense as anyones.
