The Best & Worst Footballing County?

Obviously Sussex must feature as one of the worst Counties in terms of Football clubs and the level they play at with only one League club to it’s name but what which county has the fewest League clubs?

Also what county would have the highest number?

I was thinking the worst would have to be Surrey and the best represented would have to be Greater Manchester.

Any thoughts?

cornwall, west sussex, isle of wight and rutland have never had a league football side

so they're the worst

that map's a wee bit out of date, plus i'm not sure why isle of man is on there, posing as a county

Blimey, how old is that map?

It's a wonder that you haven't found one with Wessex and Mercia on it :)

Interesting one about West Sussex having never had a football league side. Until 1974, technically speaking, Sussex was one county. Therefore, until 1974 surely the people of West Sussex did have a football team to support?

In a similar vein, now that Brighton and Hove is a unitary authority, would it be equally fair to say that East Sussex has never had a football league team?

I would argue that all of Sussex has, at some point, been represented by the Albion.

Worcester ? Not since Kidderminster Harriers dropped out of the league but the same could be said of Monmouth or for that matter, Surrey. Selhurst Park is actually in a London borough.

The best would be Lancashire if you accept that Greater Manchester and Merseyside are not separate counties.

VERY technically speaking

it was a 'ceremonial' county until then, but they actually split WAY before that

depends how pedantic you want to be really

although, regardless of this, seeing as west sussex now has a conference side, it'd still be better than cornwall, rutland and the i.o.w

the best in terms of teams is clearly greater london, but perhaps greater manchester is the most successful?

I want to be VERY pedantic.

East Sussex and West Sussex haven't been a single administrative unit since the Kingdom of Sussex was over-run by the Kingdom of Wessex way back in the dark ages.

I know its very technically speaking, just as a West Sussex person myself I wanted to point out that many Sussex people (either side of the divide) feel brighton as their own.

Ditto. I think there's plenty of West Sussex here who feel absolute affinity to Brighton, myself included.
