Is a very good call, saw a load of USA bands of that era and actually loved them more than the UK scene, we are also talking Husker Du/REM/Throwing Muses/Pixies/Nirvana.

Did get to see REM but they were in their Stadium Rock Era and weren't actually very good.

Golden Earring were on a guaranteed loser that evening. I stayed to the bitter end and I think they even played Radar Love twice. Certainly, when I saw Ace at Hove Town Hall they played How Long twice

I was at the ACE gig too. Given that I'd guess (wonder why?) you were born in 58, like me, our paths will doubtless have crossed many times over the years.

REM and Husker Du played in Vancouver repeatedly when I lived there in the ealy 80s and I always gave them both a swerve. Mrs T is a Pixies fan but isn't fond of Nirvana. I generally struggle to like North American bands unless they are very particular, like Zappa, Beefheart, Beach Boys, Love, Iggy Pop, Doors, Wall of Voodoo, Handful of Snowdrops, Moev, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembley and more recently Assemblage 23, Drab Majesty, SRSQ and Boy Harsher.

Frank Zappa was an unexpected pleasure, for some reason I had never really heard him until he was on the Bill at Knebworth in 1978.

A great musician and composer and an even better person when you heard him speak to a Congressional Committee to defend free speech in music in 1985 via the First Amendment to the Constitution.

The Illinois Enema Bandit being a perfect illustration... :lolol:

Whilst I know a fair bit about Zappa I know nothing of his actual music. Where should I start?

I’d have been armed with a marker as well if I went to your uni!

How was Mr Mellor as a kid? I meet him in Soho around 20-25 years ago. He came in with a girl and sat on the same table as me in the St Moritz Club. I struck up conversation and spent ages chatting to him, had a sip of the drink he was drinking (whisky I think) and he offered to buy a round. It got to the point where I felt I was intruding on his evening so I started to focus my talk more within my group of friends…..but he kept butting into our conversation so I gave up in the end. He was an absolute gent. Similarly, this is a fact I rarely fail to tell people :lolol:

He was about 15 when she knew him (not very well) His dad was a diplomat and a socialist. Joe was quite into politics, even at school, and a genuinely nice kid.

La Roux instead of Radiohead at Reading one year. I like La Roux but that was moronic even by my standards. Partly the fault of the bird I was with but still imbecillic. Can't imagine I'll pay the £200 or whatever ticket prices are if they ever tour again.

Scratch Perry looked about 200 every time I saw him. The man was a miracle. It was like going to see Stonehenge or something.

I wouldn’t beat yourself up about this one, definitely not imbecilic and I would thank the young lady that you were with. :)
I wouldn’t watch Radiohead if they put on a free show in the park down the road, you got off lightly there :)

I’m sure LaRoux were more fun :lolol:

When I was at university in Manchester between 1963 and 1966 there were two student unions both with live bands on Saturday nights. One week I had the choice between The Who and Sounds Inc.I had seen Sounds Inc several times and they were a great band, at that time I'd never heard of The Who so I went to see Sounds Inc again. I regret doing that as I never saw The Who.

Mid 1985 I was working in Manchester and one of the lads I worked with had tickets for a band that he said were awesome and would be big. I was knackered after travelling down from my home in Glasgow so politely declined. The band were called the 'Stone Roses' and are one of my favourites of all time. Silly me eh?

I'd love to have seen Pulp back in the 90's, at their peak.

One of my biggest regrets is that I never went to concerts in my late teens to late twenties. I was too busy chasing skirt in nightclubs and working 14 hour days...
