Anyone else finding the apparent thaw a little odd? I understand it on the roads, but the garden is starting to thaw about despite it being below freezing still. Maybe the ground temperature is warmer than the air? Is that it?

The temperature is above freezing about 1 to 2 it’s the wind chill factor making it feel colder

I seem to recall many years ago being told that in these circumstances it is evaporation rather than a thaw, a few laws of physics involved, but that might have been a dream and I am sure Papa or one of the other specialists might confirm.

I seem to recall many years ago being told that in these circumstances it is evaporation rather than a thaw, a few laws of physics involved, but that might have been a dream and I am sure Papa or one of the other specialists might confirm.

With temps below zero snow can still sublimate (go from solid/ice to vapour without a liquid state), but for most of us it's a proper thaw today- it's 2.1C here and the sun's out.
