Went for a run this morning came across a couple getting out of their car that had careered into a hedge (near the Sportsman in Burgess Hill). The road was like a sheet of glass for about 100 yards.

+2.5c in the Withdean area at the moment, and raining steadily.

Papa - why is it that on other occasions it can be as high as +3c with full blown snow falling? (Is it due to differences in humidity, or in air temperatures higher up in the atmosphere?)

Upper air temps will be a factor, as will dew point temp. If the dew point is below zero you can get snow quite high. Another factor is precipitation intensity, as in heavy precipitation colder air from aloft can get dragged down, plus you can get evaporative cooling.

At the moment we're the wrong side of marginal on just about everything.

Depending on where in Cheshire you are, the next couple of days could see snow for you. This is the latest GFS ensemble for your area. High snow percentages.

Note, this is for Cheshire not Sussex

So to answer the question earlier - through this reasonably cold spell we never tap into any really cold air, so we're always borderline for snow. Despite 20-30% every now and then I can't say for certain that we WILL see snow down here.
