This week is a real challenge to forecast. We're in a cold zonal pattern, with low upper temperatures, so despite a mainly Wly flow (NW at times) there are chances for snow UK wide. Mainly to the North and West, but at times even down here.

For example, this is the Met Office Fax Chart for Friday, and it's full of potential.

Midweek might see snow in places from an unusually cold Westerly. West Country and Midlands might see some.

In this absolute wash out of winters people are really clutching at straws now with daytime max's of 6-7C being considered a " cold snap ". We may get a bit of sleet on the very top of Ditching Beacon but that is it. The wind will just not cease coming from the SW/W all winter

Monday 26 January—Sunday 8 February

Will a new month bring any change?

At the time of writing, the latest long range weather forecasting tools suggest that the seemingly endlessly repeating pattern of Atlantic low-pressure systems bringing spells of wet and windy weather, followed by brief incursions of cold air from the west or northwest will continue well into next month. Very few of the computer models that we use to forecast the weather this far ahead suggest any sign at all of any lengthy, settled spells.

An update from Gatwick's weather man this morning:

All

Please below Forecast from Gatwick Met Forecaster

Good morning,

Please find below an update to the Adverse Weather Outlook produced yesterday morning. The next routine outlook will be issued on Thursday morning for the coming weekend.

Adverse Weather Outlook Update – Tuesday 13th January to Friday 16th January 2015

Snow and Frost Weather State: 1 ( Met office forecast snow in next 7 days but not expected to accumulate. No disruption to the Airside Operation )

Isolated wintry showers (snow or rain/snow mixed) are forecast Tuesday night (tonight), although any snow accumulation is currently expected not to be significant. The most likely time for wintry showers to affect Gatwick is after midnight until dawn on Wednesday. Any showers that do fall will present a likelihood of icy surfaces forming as ground and airframe temperatures fall to or just below freezing on Wednesday morning. A Prelim Snow Warning has been issued for the overnight period.

Airside Resource X6 Controllers X6 Support Team X4 AFS from Duty team if required

X10 Polar Bears called in to support Anti Icing Operations.

TE called in to Support Vehicles for Anti Icing Operations

A second cold night is expected on Thursday night with isolated showers again possible, although these are likely to be mainly of rain. However, this again presents a risk of icy surfaces developing as ground and airframe temperatures fall close to or just below freezing for Friday morning.

Flood Weather State: 1( Met office forecast high rainfall ( > 5mm / hr ) in the next 3 days, but not expected to impact Airside Operations )

On Wednesday night, a further 15-25mm of rainfall is expected. The Mole is expected to be more responsive due to earlier rain and a Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency on Monday evening. The river level is expected to peak on Thursday morning as the river responds to overnight rainfall.

Wind Weather State: 2B ( Met office forecast strong winds in next 24 hrs ( 15-25 knts ) gusting ( 20-27 knts) Expected to impact Airside Operations )

Overnight strong winds will generally ease through early morning, although a band of showers are expected to cross Gatwick through early Tuesday afternoon and gusts of 25 KT are possible (low risk of isolated gusts to 30 KT).

A spell of windy weather is expected on Wednesday night into Thursday. South-southwesterly winds are likely to strengthen to mean speeds of 25-35 KT with gusts of 45-55 KT (low risk of isolated gusts to 60 KT). The wind direction presents the risk of a significant crosswind component, particularly during late evening Wednesday through the early hours of Thursday morning. There remains some uncertainty in the exact track and depth of the associated area of low pressure, but there is increasing confidence of the crosswind component exceeding 30 KT in gusts after 2200 Wednesday. Winds are expected to ease for the first wave on Thursday morning.

Low Visibility

Not expected, although visibilities may temporarily fall close to LVP criteria in any snow showers that occur on Tuesday night.

No snow here from this feature - we're in the slightly warmer air. Wales / West Country / Midlands / Thames Valley will get some (plus the usual places further North)
