The atmosphere yesterday was diabolical and embarrassing.....

I've only missed Wycombe 1st round replay at home this season and it's not been great in terms of atmosphere but only one season left after this one and then we will be loud and make falmer a difficult place to come to ... (hopefully)

I thought that the atmosphere at home when we played Southampton and Leyton Orient were superb!

The worrying thing is that there seems to be no way of ensuring at Falmer that you're not going to end up sat in the middle of the library unless the club designate an area of the ground as The Singing Section. Tis a worry, to be sure. Unless there's a non-allocated seating section which I don't think there has been announced so far.

I've been asking this of the club for ages but with no response and it is going to be a problem at Falmer too, everyone knows it's the sit where you want, stand if you want and having a roof that makes the atmosphere at away games so good - but if they want everyone sitting in numbered seats at Falmer like tins of beans on a shelf, so that the singers can't congregate together behind the goal (which is where the 'singing section' should be), as at The Goldstone, even our shiny new stadium will lack atmosphere - just look at how good the German stadiums usually are, with a terrace like feel to them.

I went to Seagulls Over London the other week and one of the things Tony Bloom said the club are planning is to have three singing sections and a family area, all clearly defined as so.

Why does it have to be sit where you want? Are you incapable of singing if you don't have a choice of seat on the day?

Can't you work out "this is where we all want to be in this block, make sure you all get a seat in rows G-W, seat 135-300, then we'll all be together in our area". Is it impossible to pre-plan where you're all going to sit on the day so that you are all together?

The main west stand will be full of moaners so you can write that stand off.

What a ridiculous generalisation.

I do agree, though, that the North Stand should have at least an area of unallocated seating...nearest we'll get to standing terraces, I'm afraid.

Anyone who thinks that the lack of a roof at Withdean has anything at all to do with the atmosphere should go to a game at Cádiz. 3 sides of the ground have no roof but the atmosphere is fantastic (even if they aren't doing very well this season :nono:)

It's not the lack of a roof at Withdean that is the problem, that's just an excuse.

I honestly believe the lack of atmosphere over the last couple of years, is basically down to the shite quality of football produced.
The last 3 months has been so much better.....im actually enjoying going to Withdean again.
Lets hope that next year , Gus and the boys produce the exciting type of football that will get the excitement going and then that,im sure, will get a much better atmosphere .

Gawd Almighty.... Listen to you all!
I moved down here from Chester two years ago and all I have ever heard is people moaning about Withdean.
As I am sure you all know Chester had a pretty good ground, but what bloody good is that if you dont have a team! I would support my team if they had to play in a muddy field, so get behind the lads no matter WHERE they have to play!
I suggest you all thank your lucky stars that you have been pulled out of the shit and been allowed to use the Withdean. Stop whinging and look forward to the long overdue move to Falmer!

This is the problem though, if you have a block of season ticket holders who maybe don't want to sing sitting amongst the singers, not all singers come from the same area/town so cannot buy tickets in a very localized area of the ground so you end up with little groups all over, starting different songs - hence sit where you want is the best solution to this, just get in a bit early for the big games, as you did at The Goldstone. - Tony Bloom has apparently stated there will be several singing sections and a family zone in the ground so hopefully these will be where the singers want to go (rather than the police who seem to like to coral all possible trouble at one end of grounds)

I sat with my boy [and my brother - his first visit to Withdean] in B Block on Saturday. We're usually in the Family Stand [apparently, like people in the North Stand that doesn't make us 'supporters'?] but I think there were a few Gully's Gang Members cashing in their complimentary tickets so the Family Stand was full.

This is a bit of a tired subject really. Of course there's not much of an atmosphere at Withdean because of its location, size etc BUT the atmosphere changes when:

a] We play well

b] We go a goal down and start to pick things up to get back in the game

c] We beat a big club [Man City anybody?]

d] One - or all - of the Officials isn't very good

I'd love it to be an all-singing, all-dancing Brazilian Festival of Delights every time we turn up there but it ain't gonna happen all the time we're not winning 5-0 every game or while we're in a municipal athletics stadium. In essence, we can't keep blaming Withdean for our shortcomings on the pitch and we can't expect to win every game by a rugby score.

How long into 2011-12 before we get the 'Shit Atmosphere At Falmer' thread?

I sat in J block with my boy on Saturday for the first time and there was three things that struck me.

1. Because there's no roof over the South or Family stand, you can't hear any shouting. I've sat in various places over the last 10 years and the best place was when I had a season ticket and that was at the back of F block.

2. I've said it before that the singing section is laughable - they sing one or two songs over the course of the match and that's it!

3. The stewards have killed the atmosphere! Whenever anyone in the singing section do start singing (which invariably leads to, quite rightly, standing up) the stewards are there like flies ordering people to sit down and once this happens everyone just clams up...yet, you have people in the away end, the family stand and most people in the back rows all standing up.

There was one steward (with the words 'Response' on his jacket - Response to what?) on Saturday who, I swear, thought he was TJ Hooker - little weasley bloke with 80's style sunglasses...seemed to take great pleasure in getting people to sit down.

Most of the season, I've gone in the Family Stand and I have to say that the atmosphere is a hundred times better there than in any other part of the ground - OK, so you can't call the ref a w*nk*r, but the kids there seem to remember that they're there to enjoy themselves rather than spend an afternoon moaning!

Totally agree with you.

Careful though - some on here will say you're not a supporter if you sit in the Family Stand.
