[Football] The Athletic

Understand getting a mercenary for Bournemouth but surprised they made the absolutely dreadful Carl Anka their man for Southampton. Would have thought they were big enough to get a specialist and unlikely to go down. He is an absolutely appalling journalist and broadcaster, in my opinion like. What are your thoughts on him Nick?

Interesting The Athletic decided to get into Podcasts. I wonder how long it will be before we have to start paying for the Totally Football Show?!

What’s wrong with Anka?

I’ve got a reminder in my phone for October renewal countdown.

I took the 40% deal and consider it worth it at that price. Wouldn’t pay full price

I was always taught that if you can't say something nice about a person, don't say anything. So you may very well think that about Carl Anka, but I couldn't possibly comment.

The obvious move for The Athletic would have been to get Adam Leitch from the Echo, who is a top operator and covered Saints for 20 years. He knows the club and where various bodies are buried. But he wanted a change (can you blame him?) and is now press officer for Super League Triathlon.

To echo a couple of the above posts, I bought it and now keep forgetting to read it. And I think, in spite of his misguidedly antagonistic past on social, it's better to keep schtum if you've nowt nice to say about AN. Going from 20+ years at a tabloid to TA's model cannot be easy and I always find his stuff decent. Pleased for him to have a reward after decades in the Hollingbury Bunker.

Problem with the Athletic for me is that they don't have any Rugby, Cricket, F1 etc. I love watching football, I don't get particularly excited about reading stories on it unless they're about my team! The bloke that covers Derby for the site is absolutely excellent but it's a lot of wedge for just that.....

Veltman is a classic example of why I wont bother with the Athletic. A player we've tracked for ages, kept tabs on, engaged with and signed. To my knowledge no one had a clue he was going to. Respect to the club for the way they keep things quiet - especially after the likes of Stephen Ward and Pritchard went elsewhere when they broke ‐ but it just proves that he is as much guessing about transfers as most of us on here and is thrown the odd scrap.

Until Andy Naylor can report something I don't already know, I wont bother. That and mikeyjh point about coverage of other sports.

Not sure Naylor leaking top secret transfer gossip ahead of deals being done will do the club any favours ?

Not sure why people are criticising Naylor. It's quite obvious that the club dictate what gets printed so he's totally reliant of Camillin and co. I think he's done a great job in the circumstances.

Fascinated to see the Athletic circulation figures after their first year with all the deals, hope they are published soon.

Absolutely it won't but Naylors job is to find a reason to make people like me buy a subscription. Even with the clickbaity headlines he puts on his articles I haven't come close to dipping into my wallet. We all know, for example, that we need a more mobile version of Dan Burn at left back. Why would I cough up to read it?

Yeah I got my 40% off deal but goes to full price from end of September so I’ll cancel and perhaps renew on another deal later

I paid £29.99 for my first year and have been delighted with the scope of articles I've read and also their quality.
My renewal in September is asking for £59.99 which I feel is a little steep.
If I can get it for £40 I'll take it.

To be fair, I don’t think The Athletic are trying to do breaking stories as such, they’re trying to do more in depth writing. My issue is that Naylor is not a strong enough writer for this. I find his writing incredibly dull and really lacking in substance. His antagonistic attitude to the fans always infuriates me too.

In general I think The Athletic is still a long way behind The Guardian and Times when it comes to current news stories and also The Blizzard on more in depth subjects.

What’s stopping anyone not renewing and then just buying a new subscription at what seems to be a permanent offer of 50% off?

Honestly, you expect the club to flag up that they are planning to sign a multi million player for £900k from under the noses of other interested clubs?
