I was just thinking, is the Ashes one the world's oldest sporting rivalry?

I was trying to think of some other sporting rivalries that go back to 1882 and struggled to think of any.

Doesn't Celtic and Rangers stem from some incident in 1600 ?

Mind you they were not playing footie then.

Never heard that before.

It was a Marist brother that started Celtic, not sure about Rangers.

Unless the 1600 reference is to the Jaccobite Scots who were butchered by the Scots who sided with the English?

Sussex v Surrey in cricket goes back a fair way, further than Yorks v Lancs, as I love to inform people from those parts.

Think its referring to the Battle of the Boyne, which effectively shaped sectarian history in Northern Ireland ever since.

I believe the oldest cricketing rivalry is actually a complete surprise - I'm sure I remember reading that it is USA v Canada.

Indeed. The first international cricket match was USA v Canada in 1844. Canada won by 23 runs.

yes, apparently USA selected a batsman wicketkeeper and left out their best spin bowler...
