The albums thread - 2014

Never been bothered about this chap much (apart from Sea Change) but, despite some obvious influences, think Morning Phase is rather special.

So, we're nearly a quarter of the way through 2014. I'm somehow listening to classical and soundtracks and have barely bought anything that involves a guitar. Apart from War on Drugs who I've never taken to, what's the album of the year so far, people?

I was thinking about this. Probably East India Youth so far. Against the odds, that Eagulls album IS a real grower. For a mellow afternoon, Mutual Benefit earns the terrible adjective "lovely".

East India Youth, Angel Olsen, Tara Jane O'Neil, Nenah Cherry, Mark McGuire, Patten, Eagulls & Actress have stood out for me.

Actress has been the biggest grower for me - loving my triple LP version.

East India Youth and Angel Olsen the best of the bigger stuff.

Liars was a big disappointment, War on Drugs is taking some time to sink in.

Maybe I should give Actress another listen. And I've yet to listen to the Angel Olsen album, despite going to see her.

I quite like the Angel Olsen one, but it's a little bit coffee shop (my very lazy classification for anything featuring a woman with a good voice who does not punish the ears or a man with a deep baritone who is not growling, yelling or shouting).

I have to agree. The first three months of the year have not replicated the end of 2013 as far as quality of releases are concerned. Liars I like and the live Nick Cave Album. That's about it. Mogwai disappointed as did Beck. East India Youth was ok but too much going on in one release- I preferred the free soundtrack cd that came with it. On a positive plenty to look forward to such as Ema, Bo Ningen and Swans.

I didn't totally get on with Rick's solo album so this is a very pleasant surprise.

Really pleased about this as I had almost given up on them. I have seen them live a few times inc a lunchtime slot at The Albert which was a stunning set and once at Audio as part of Great Escape. May have to dig out my Phantom Band T Shirt which consists of a cat cleaning its privates. I wear it to family gatherings.

My mate put that gig on (the lunchtime one) we had them round for pasta, a lovely lot, except for the manager who just spent the time muttering about money, swearing in a Scottish accent and drinking heavily. I have the same T-Shirt as you and a fine one it is too!

I remember it well as it was a strange time of day to see a band. We got talking to the them before hand- they were pretty exhausted from what I remember as had played the night before and traveled down to the coast for the afternoon.They were brilliant though and like you say, really decent blokes. Now where's that T shirt?

Very much looking forward to the final album in Radical Face's Family Tree trilogy. Also a possible new album from Ben Cooper's other guise Electric President. New tracks to be released as a taster soon, apparently. So all good.

I have bought that Nick Cave KCRW album the other week. It's a live-in-the-studio album lifting heavily from the Push The Sky away album and the live versions are lovely; dare I say it better than the parent album.

Am listening to this now, not having done so for a few months. I do like the live songs, but what I love about the 'parent album' is Jubilee Street, and the way that it drives the entire album, and this is absent from 'the offspring'.

Killing Joke In Dub for me, I think the only other 2014 release I've bought yet is High Hopes by The Boss and the awesome Pledge vinyl package I got in the mail a month or so ago has The Joke a long way in the clear, red yellow and green rasta vinyl no less.....

Dropped my son at a party in LaserZone in West St today and had a whole hour and a half to kill. Went straight to Resident without passing go. Being an overweight early forties Dad I tend to just follow their recommendations albeit within the genres I like. I don't have time to devour NME and spend five hours at a listening post these days, more's the pity. I got:

Elbow - The Take Off and Landing of Everything. On first listening has everything I like in an Elbow album. A few nods to previous songs in terms of chords and key changes but some fantastic Guy Garvey lyrics ("G&T and sympathy") and it's still prog without the solos.

The War On Drugs - discussed elsewhere. New on me. Like a lot. Am I right in hearing musical influences from early U2 and, at times, Dire Straits? Or is that just me.

Malawi Mouse Boys - Dirt is Good. F****ng amazing. Played twice already and may be going in for thirds shortly. If you like African / world with dub reggae hints it's the business.

It's official - The War on Drugs are the Dire Straits it's ok to like. Or maybe now is the time to reappraise the Sultans of Swing. I admit that I purchased Love Over Gold when I was 13 - nothing else though.

Is anyone thinking of purchasing Mac DeMarco tomorrow? I think I'll try on Spotify first - not confident enough to buy before i try...
