Leicester 4-1 we spoilt their party, it was funny

We'd not won any of the previous five games going into the game, and it was the catalyst that saw us take 14 points from a possible 18 in the last six games of the season, culminating in Ulloa's winner at Forest.

Obviously it went horribly wrong in the playoffs against Derby but let's not talk about that.

Can anyone remember who was Manchester City's leading goalscorer that season, and who won player of the season twice, and the overall 'City player of the 80's' award, where they were signed from, and for how much?

It was a Tuesday night in GRIMSBY, last away match of the 1984/5 season, and the Albion had a remote chance of promotion if we won our last two matches. We had won on the Saturday, beating Wolves 5-1 in front of a PACKED Goldstone ground (attendance 8,581) and there were nearly 100 of us at Blundell Park on the Tuesday.

I had my accounting exams on the Wednesday, but as usual put the Albion first and common sense second, so drove over to the match in my Morris Marina.

It seemed like a wasted journey, as we were one down at half time, and Grimsby scored another shortly after the break.

In the 77th minute Hans Kraay scored what we thought was a consolation, followed amazingly by Alan Biley and two from Terry Connor for an outrageous 4-2 victory. Suitably inspired by the Albion, I managed to pass all my exams.

It meant that on the Saturday, if results had gone our way, we could have gone up. As you can imagine the Goldstone was packed to the rafters with loyal fans (attendance 13,184) to see us win 1-0 thanks to an OG, but Manchester City won 5-0 that afternoon and went up instead' along with Birmingham and of course, the league champions, Oxford United. After the match, there was what could perhaps be described as some 'nawtiness' between the Albion crew and the away fans from Sheffield United, on the pitch of course in true 80's stylee.

Another honourable mention to a 4-1 victory at Blackburn the following season, again on a Tuesday night, and another two goals for Terry Connor.

I don't know what you were doing in Grimsby other than watching the game in the pub, given that the ground is actually in Cleethorpes.

On the subject of Alex Dawson, think we won 5-1 or 5-2 and also remember John Vinnicombe saying that he should have scored five but after rounding the keeper, he rolled the ball towards the empty net, only for it to stick in the mud and be cleared.

I can't, know,but wasn't it John Aldridge scoring all the goals for Oxford,seem to recall us trying to sign him first,but he went there instead

Shrewsbury 1972, great times 0-0 HT won 5-3, long coach journey home after, we scored 5 at Halifax and 4 at Rotherham, scoring 43 away that season.

Didn't go to Shrewsbury that season and heard that it was 0-0 at HT. Watched BBC at final whistle, as the old teleprinter clattered into action. My heart sank as ' Shrewsbury 3 ' appeared, only to leap again as ' Brighton 5 ' then came up. From despair to joy in about 2 seconds.
In these days of instant scores and results, people forget the trauma of watching that old printer clatter away, never knowing what to expect.

can you remember how it came about?

It was Rotherham Utd, second replay on a neutral ground. I was six at the time and came down the next morning to find my dad asleep/unconscious/whatever on the floor; he'd clearly had a good time. I figured it must be down to the football so I nagged him to take me along. My first game was later that year in August and I still wear the scarf I was given then.
We lost 2-1 to Preston at Deepdale in the next round with Tom Finney scoring of course. My dad had a signed photo of Roy Jennings tackling the great man at that game but my mum seems to have lost it or thrown it away. Anyway, I'll be at Deepdale with our son in a couple of weeks, we've scheduled time after the game for a drink or two and a few memories.
