Inexcusable behaviour from Smith last night. You simply cannot resort to violence like that! Plenty of other ways to show your disdain to someone. In my opinion he should have been thrown out or arrested there and then.

The joke wasn’t funny and can be seen as offensive and I really can’t get into the ins and outs of whether being offended should cancel a joke.

What makes it all sadder is that for years they have been calling for equality within the Oscars. In a year when a black man hosted and a black man won the leading actor award one of them struck the other in full view of the world.

I do wonder what would have happened if he had punched (and not slapped) and knocked Rock unconscious.

I dont know her

Would I really want that... hmm. It depends on who I was. If I was the kind of woman who wants that, then yes. If I was the kind of woman who doesnt want that, then no. [If I felt really bad about the subject of the "poor joke" - lets say I've spent a lot of days crying about this condition, maybe was even suffering from depression because of it, requiring therapy etc., then yes I might find it quite romantic and chivalrous if he fought for me. But again... depends on the personality and preferences of the woman; I dont know Jada so I dont know how she feels about it.

You've already stated what kind of woman you'd be, by saying that you don't know if your husband would be worth keeping, if he didn't react in the way WS did.

As for Jada, I don't know her either, but I think it's a safe assumption that being part of the celebrity lifestyle, she's not one to shy away if she chose to.

For someone who is anti-war, pro-peace and live in a traditionally neutral part of the world, you do seem to be condoning violent behaviour, in response to some ill-chosen words.

Yes, but then you had me thinking: would I be that woman? Not sure. I might have been more independent. Its hard to tell... I dont know what kind of dog I would have been if I was a dog or what kind of evil space monster I would have been either.

And yes I do condone some savage behaviour in some circumstances and within limits, I think it is needed in a healthy world. Would we have less brutal murders, less forceful violence and less anger cooking within ourselves if we on the odd occasion could accept taking or giving a little slap and a "fu"? I think so.

Even in the case of reacting physically to an unfunny joke? You don't consider that a bit extreme?
If you accept that response, then I worry about how far you'd go if he'd actually laid a hand on her, physically, instead of verbally.
Savage behaviour shouldn't be condoned in any circumstances, in my opinion.

Yes of course I would.

As a matter of interest what would YOU do if someone took the piss out of your Wife/Partners obvious ill Health to your face?

Not even going to entertain that ridiculous post. I’ll let a poster on the far superior thread on the Palace board about this topic answer for me:

As a thoroughly decent modern husband I know if I slapped my wife’s friend and colleague for something like that, she’d think I was the cūnt. But then we talk these things through like adults and I don’t ever try to suggest I know what’s best for her.

Worrying how many have your outdated view of chivalry on here what with being the father of a daughter. Hope my girl ends up with someone as awesome and progressive towards women as I am, and not someone like you.

Your response on this thread just taps into your strong beliefs about bullying, maybe in this instance you believe Will is "Standing Up To The Bully" but your views are tainted by your own experiences rather than just this incident as it is (which is Will Smith being a **** imo).

Yes even in the case of someone mocking my wife for her medical condition.

Chris Rock mocked Jada for her medical condition, and Will slapped him. That is the incident as it is. I think Will did the right thing, others disagree. It is what it is.

If I was a woman being verbally harassed, I'd feel quite proud that my husband was able to keep control of his base instincts, and not treat me like the 'little woman' in need of protection from an (admittedly) ill-chosen joke.
In fact, I'd like to think that as said woman, I'd be capable of defending myself to such a thing, and shame Chris Rock into making an apology, rather then rely on my husband to do it on my behalf, in a physical manner.

Brilliant response! Sadly we have probably two generations of women who don't always think like that.

But he didn't mock her medical condition, he joked that she looks like GI Jane (lean, muscular, buzz cut). Which she does. And not a derogatory comparison.

As an aside, I heard this story on the drive in to work this morning, but was only half-listening. I thought Smith had slapped THE Rock. "Bloody hell, now THAT was ballsy", I thought to myself.

Imagine my disappointment when I saw it.

And give ones!

Oversocialisation and its consequences such as suppressing our primal urges and emotions is the main reason why we are in a time of poor mental health.

I completely disagree, but hey ho - and please don't divulge any details of your own primal urges, as I'm quite looking forward to my dinner, later.

Or maybe, just maybe, as the ceremony has completely lost all relevance and most importantly it's audience, the whole escapade was staged from the start.

OK I'm now going to take this ' left field ' a bit and that's despite me contributing to some of the previous more obvious debates.

Are we sure this is not some bizarre set up involving the main two protagonists? Far fetched but maybe people can remember Joachim Phoenix's bizarre David Letterman interview back in 2009? It looked like he'd seriously lost the plot but instead it was linked to a film he was making and the jolly jape or method acting to the extreme was to stay in character permanently.

I proffer this theory on the basis of watching the slap footage back a few times and to me it's very strange. The weird bitch slap looks all too stylistic in its deliver even to the extent of a weird follow through with his arm. It looks like a Hollywood strike that doesn't actually make contact. And Rock's reactions are curious. When Smith approaches it's pretty obvious it's an aggressive move yet Rock is totally impassive and there's not a hint of a even the slightest defensive posture. He also recovers albeit from a slap remarkably quickly and his composure is back pretty quick.

Admittedly pretty far fetched and Smith's cursing looks pretty real and we had all the tears and apologies later. But then he is an actor!
