The 23 Men Who Killed Football

From January 2009's FHM:

No. 17: Bill Archer and David Bellotti

Crime: Displaced Supporters

In 1993 Bill Archer Buys a controlling stake in Brighton and Hove Albion for £56.25. No, we haven't missed an 'm' off - it really was just under £60. He makes David Bellotti Chief Executive. In 1995 they sell the club's ground for £7.4 million without consulting the fans. In 1997 'home advantage' is turned into a 70-mile trek to Gillingham. In 2002 Archer sells shares for £1 million. In 2008 Brighton remain homeless. And fans still sing: "Build a bonfire, build a bonfire, put Bill Archer on the top, stick Bellotti in the middle and we'll burn the f***ing lot." Illegal perhaps. But understandable.

Given where we are now, do we really have that much to moan about?

You are kidding aren't you ? Are you old enough to have been around when that c*nt Archer was in charge ? Quite frankly I hope he dies tomorrow and dies the most painful death possible !

I think the key date is 2002 when BA f***ed off with his ill gotten gains and come 2011, albeit 9 long years later, we'll be in our brand spanking new home and to quote a horrendous 80's song, 'The Only Way is Up...' :clap2:

Yes I was there.

All of the protests,Hereford and the journeys to Gillingham.

Perhaps my ending comment was badly put. What I meant was, given what we went through back then, why is there so much moaning about only being 17th in League One?

Back in 97, the football was appalling and suffering Gillingham was even worse.

I'd glady take what we've got now over going through all that again.

So I take it that the worst starts at number 17 then instead of number 1 ????????? some of those people like lovejoy, scudamore and ball suggestions are absolutely f***ing ridiculous !!!

Why isn't Stanley ever included? The booze sodden piece of shit is probably more responsible than the other two twats for the situation we find ourselves in.

1 Important people and supporters protect him.

2 Your question is spot on as there is a case for saying that he benefited more than Archer from the asset stripping of the club.

I'd like to know how and why Lovejoy is considered to have killed football nearly as bad as those ***** ?

Does he not epitomise the 'regular' fan that selects a team at random and ignores the local team? I daresay we would be a whole lot richer if the Brightonians preferred to watch Brighton instead of being odious ***** and watching a Premiership side (either on the box or live).

I don't quite get the Charleroi one and a quick google doesn't find the incident they were referring to - what happened to get them there?

Not sure how white boots killed football either!

I think Charleroi are now used as a test case for clubs suing international Football Associations if their player is injured whilst on international duty.

I guess white boots are linked to the prima donna type footballer who is a cheating and diving type player.

Not sure about Charleroi, but there have been loads of strange shennanigans in Belgian football over the years, with financial irregularities and club mergers. If you want a story about as painful as our own look at RSC Liege, they were a top flight club in the late 80's and playing in Europe...they then pretty much ceased to exist, before being reborn a few years ago, they are currently engaged in a battle to build a new ground.
