To the best of my knowledge, the following youngsters (other than those whose release we already know about) have a contract which expires at the end of this season. Of course, it is always possible that extensions were signed that weren't publicised, or there are options which the club may (or may not) exercise:-

Benicio Baker-Boaitey
Samy Chouchane
James Furlong
Jack Hinchy
Teddy Jenks
Marc Leonard
Tom McGill
Todd Miller
Sam Packham
Fynn Talley (GK)
Lorent Tolaj
Antef Tsoungui
Jensen Weir

In addition, I am not sure of the contract durations for Killian Cahill, Billie Clark, Leigh Kavanagh and Casey Shann, so it is possible that any or all of these are also out of contract this summer.

Hopefully we will get some definitive news from the club this week.
It really does show our rapid progress that potentially all of those names might be released. Many of those would, you'd think, have at least semi decent careers at Championship level.

As an aside - the only players out of the (very youthful) 18-man matchday squad from that Villa cup-tie in 2019 who are currently still with the club are Teddy Jenks, Aaron Connolly and Jason Steele. There is every chance that, within a few weeks, Steele could be the sole survivor. Much is made - rightly - of our youth system these days, but it just goes to show how difficult it is to actually produce Premier League ready youngsters and what a high dropout rate there is.

I remember being very excited about a number of players from that group. Jenks, Roberts and Connolly particularly looked as though they could make the cut. As you say, it goes to show just how difficult it is 1) just to step up into the men’s professional game 2) to do so at a top half PL club.

Before that was the Alzate, Molumby, Sanders, Gyokeres, Sanchez, White group. White and Sanchez made it but the others are developing good careers and building their names.

We have high hopes now for the likes of Turns, Rushworth, Peupion, Moran, Samuels, Hinshelwood, Offiah and probably more that I’ve missed.

If one or two of those guys manage to become regulars for us that’s a hell of an achievement, and no disrespect at all to those players, who should still be able to have good pro careers.

A good problem to have, but still bittersweet looking at the release lists every year.

Am I right in thinking that it they move on we would still be entitled to some compenstion payments - not a huge boost to profitability, but better than nowt?
Of those on loan, Furlong, Leonard, Weir and Tsoungui all had decent loan spells. I understand Tsoungui is making moves away already; will Furlong stay with 'Well? - I think they'd quite like to keep him, and going north seems to have worked well for Cochrane. Leonard and Weir look good for a loan at the next level, if they still remain with us. Miller, Jenks and Tolaj, like Spong, were not so fortunate with their loans - guess they might be likely to follow Spong, Bull and Everitt and co.

Antef Tsoungui has now announced his departure from the club on social media. He made one appearance for the first team, starting in the Carabao Cup victory at Cardiff City in August 2021.

That is now Toby Bull, Matt Everitt, Ben Wilson, Haydon Roberts, Jack Spong and Antef Tsoungui who have announced they have been released by the club.

So do we now know where Tsoungui has gone? There were rumours he was in talks with someone - has that come to fruition? Our loss, I think.

If we release them, then no.

I was just taking a look at the annual FA Agents Transactions Report for Feb 2022 - Jan 2023 (as one does on a Sunday afternoon) and I see that Jensen Weir extended his contract with the club in the period (which, I'm fairly certain, has not previously been reported). The report used to show the date of each transaction but annoyingly that column was dropped a few years ago; however, the transactions - 50 for Albion - are shown in chronological order (based on those that WERE reported at the time). Weir's extension seems to have been agreed in July 2022 (presumably around the time of his loan to Morecambe).

Edit: Unfortunately the details of each transaction are not revealed so no idea what the new contract length is.

Oh what it is to have your dad working at a senior level in the club!

Only joking! - young Weir has had a good season on loan at Morecambe. Maybe (probably) not up to our first team level (yet anyway) but a loan at a higher level than League 1 has plenty of promise.
Lots of interest for next season.

He was decent but never really recovered from his injury in December 2021, I thought he made a lot of mistakes on his return in the first half of this season

Of that list I’d like to see BBB, Chouchane, Hinchy, Leonard, Miller and Weir extended, obviously McGill has, which was a surprise I have to say. The rest I don’t think are going to make it here or this level, but will have decent careers elsewhere I’m sure.

TBF, he hadn't played much for us since his return from a bad injury. I'd loved to have seen him on a season long loan to the Championship - or even a top League 1 team.
Oh well, he's gone now. C'est la vie.

Any thoughts on how Benicio Baker-Boaitey has been doing? I was quite excited about him when he signed

It looks like Aaron Connolly could be heading for the exit. I guess he’s only seen as Championship standard, even with that performance against Spurs in our early EPL days. De Zerbi favours a target man and wide forwards, so it makes sense for him to move on I guess.

I rate him quite highly, always seems to be exciting when he’s involved with the 21s, but still regularly plays with the 18s, so I would like him to be given a contract and gradually introduced to be full time with the 21s. I think there are some flaws to his game, but they can ironed out.
