Grandad. After 24 years in the navy he was due to retire when WW2 was declared. Lost when HMS Exmouth went down in 1940. Stepdad, aged 6, learned of his death when a kid at school announced it to the class. Shit.

Wish more people would think less about the 2 world wars now, and more our recent ones. Thousands of damaged vets and bereaved families living amongst us right now who should be front left and centre of our attention. Totally inadequate system looking after them, as always it’s the Charities that so the most. Governments are and have always been found wanting in this respect throughout history. On personal note, I can’t believe it’s nearly 20years now since lost a mate in Afghanistan. Not just today, but there’s probably not been a week since he passed I haven’t thought of him at some point.
