I'd heard about the incident (didn't see it at the game itself), and was ready to get very angry that Wissa didn't get sent off. Then I watched it back, and wondered what all the fuss was about. He tried to get the ball, accidentally hit Billy, and is then clearly mortified. It was an accident. Obviously if it was some idiot like Bruno Fernandez I might think differently, though.... :)

Just watched it. Looks a lot of fuss about nothing. I do wish people would try and be a bit more reasonable/impartial when slagging off referees. If that had been the other way round and Wissa was holding the ball, you'd all be having a go at him for trying to delay the free kick when we're a goal behind, and that Gilmour never intended to make contact with his face.

I think by the letter of the law that’s a sending off. Yes, Gilmour’s wound him up and there’s not really much in the way of intent, but it should be a red.

Applying some common sense to it in a close game? I can see why a ref wouldn’t give it even if they should

He was trying to slap the ball out of Billy’s hands because he was preventing the feee kick being taken quickly. Caught him in the face completely by accident. Yellow was the right call.
I agree. He looked really embarrassed and wee Billy clearly took it for what it was.

That said, the Stockley park wanker could easily have looked up from the line of coke he were about to sniff, brush away whoever it was beneath his chair, giving him a gobble, and instruct the ref to give a penalty to Manchester United.

Presumably he quickly realised it was just Brighton and got on with enjoying his lovely evening.

Is it just me, it seems acceptable recently by refs to let opposition players abuse our lads. A clear intention by the Forest player on a yellow to stamp on Pedro’s back and now it’s deemed ok to punch Billy in the face. Enciso would have made the most of it and maybe the outcome would have been different although it shouldn’t be that way.

Not sure on it. One angle he looks like his eyes are only on the ball and inadvertently caught Gilmour's face in the process when Billy moved himself and the ball away, another angle shows that he swung, stopped mid swing and then continued the swing and hit Billy in the face and was nowhere near the ball.
I think yellow was "fair" but also think a red card would had been a fair result as even if not intentional, he still struck him in the face and was a silly thing to do.

You are right. It is a carefully plotted conspiracy. Probably being masterminded by Jeremy Corbyn and That Meryl.

This is harsh on Gilmour, imo. If this incident had played out against pretty much ANY PL opposition, with the roles reversed, Fernandes / McGinn / Gordon would have been writhing on the ground for a full minute in tears, 8 of their team mates would have been screaming and spitting in the ref’s face, and the Albion player would have been trudging off the field, planning what to do over their three week holiday.
All probably true. Doesn't alter my point that footballers do go straight to ground faceclutching if someone blows on one of their eyelashes though. It's in their DNA.

Adam El Abd was a master at it, despite him being built like a bison on steroids.

If he is 100% going for the ball, why was his fist so high and so far away from the ball?
He used his left hand when the ball was in Gilmour's left arm so completely the wrong side to try to 'grab' it.

Gilmour lifts the ball away with one hand, in doing so the ball literally touched his own upper arm, shoulder. Gilmour then moved the ball behind himself. In short the ball was near his face.

Funny how opinions differ. Their pen was an obvious one on Saturday, and ours definitely wasn't. Ref didn't need to go to the screen i agree, but laws of the game state drop ball was correct after the pen was given then not given.

Last night Gilmour was clearly trying to prevent play from restarting; wissa swung to swipe the ball from his arm (he's clearly looking at the ball) - something and nothing for me as others have said on this thread. Was hardly a punch - again lots of blue and white tinted specs on here over this
Sorry but I thought it was clear the Ref got this bit wrong. Someone posted that if the Ref blows and stops the game for a pen and it is overturned THEN it is a drop ball. If the play is stopped by ball out of play and then the Ref blows for a pen and it is then overturned, the next play should be a throw-in, goal-kick or corner. (y)

Even if that is true. He is a professional sportsman with presumably incredible coordination. He misses the ball by about a yard and slaps him in his face. Haven't seen anything that clumsy since Jeremy Corbyn went to high five a woman and grab her breast instead!

The Forest player wasn't already on a yellow (and didn't get one either), but that is academic as there was a clear stamp down with force on Pedro's back followed up by a kick when he was laid on the floor. Either should be red card offences, especially the first.

For the incident last night, I'm a bit torn, there probably wasn't any intent to actually punch Billy (he was probably trying to get the ball back) and describing it as a punch is quite generous. However under the laws of the game, raising your hand and making contact with an opponents face like that should be a sending off offence, intent doesn't need to be there. About the only way you should be able to get away with making contact with an opponent like that is when challenging for the ball and not knowing the other player is there, eyes on the ball and all that.

You certainly get the feeling, with how things are going this season, if it had been the other way round, our player would have been seeing a straight red.
