Normally when the team looks flat and in need of a fillip, you think all we need is that little spark , that little pick me up to turn the corner.

Well we had that with the late equaliser against Palace, the Liverpool second half, the late West Ham equaliser, the late Southampton equaliser. None of them seems to have worked though injuries haven't helped.

Makes you wonder how we're going to turn this corner.

Here
He’s a good manager doing the job with one hand tied behind his back. Welbeck (injuries), Maupay and Connolly isn’t the most fearsome strike force. The whole club needs a lift, it feels so flat. Perhaps a good performance from one of the U23s deputising for injuries/Covid or a new signing might get us going. As the run without a win lengthens it just sucks all the enthusiasm from everyone.

Bad times

This, he's not been given the full set of tools to do the job so the blame for this lies elsewhere. Except we can't locate the blame there because he whose name must not be spoken has already invested a massive sum into the club. But, in the immortal words of Gustavo Poyet at the time of his departure, the "club" seem to have "...hit the roof" - so Potter has also now discovered where the roof is!!

I've criticised Potter in the past for vaguely similar things as have been put on here already. While some of the football last season was at least entertaining we don't even have that any more and we look a side bereft of ideas. And I'm still far from convinced he knows how to win matches. Not lose? Tick. Win? Less so.

But all that said, last night is not the hill I'm going to die on, nor should it negatively impact Potter's standing with anyone. That was a side that was genuinely down to the bare bones. It's not fair to negatively judge him on an injury and covid ravaged side.

But let's stop pretending he's the messiah just because our passing and possession stats are nice and there are a couple of ex Academy players in the side.

So what was being compared to other PL coaches was his win ratio.

He's great at not losing, but in the 3 points for a win era that isn't necessarily good enough.

This is true but drawing and not conceding many is the main reason we have avoided relegation battles. The issue is as its been for quite sometime a quality striker whose consistent. Ive no doubt we would have won last night with Maupay/Welbeck fit. Mwepu missing sitters and could have been a different reaction had we drawn instead of lost last night.

This!
I'm all for his approach when it comes to incremental improvement.
I think it is a great ideal, but unless we are taking a few steps backwartds before a glorious improvement, we look to be going the wrong way at the moment.

But plenty were thinking all was lost at this time last season,
Happy to see what the new year brings.

Surely Graham Potter has taken us as far as he can.

11 without a win, soul destroying boring boring football, continued denial that we need a striker and utterly perplexing substitutions week in week out.

People bang on about where he's got us, potterball, suggesting I'm trolling etc. I'm not, I've been trying to get this across to you for 2 seasons now. If this is Potterball it's an actual pile of shit. Football is about winning and scoring goals and we do neither.

We are sinking like the titanic and Potter is out of his depth.

How’s life on the trawler?

You could probably argue Potter has hit his brief of keeping us up whilst reducing the age of the squad , integrating dev players and changing the style.

To get to the next level takes a budget beyond what we would pay

Question then remains , could another manager get more out of this squad ?

For me possibly

How different are these to Hughton’s stats? Don’t score much don’t concede much

In which case, the club should provide him with players who can score goals, we have amazing talent in defence and holding midfield but we have very very few players who can shoot and finish.

We created some good shooting opportunities last night but players like March, Lallana, Bissouma, Mwepu (he started off so well), Moder, Alzate etc are only ever going to score 1 or 2 goals per season because their shooting is so very poor.

The problem with Hughton was that he didn't have a vision to move us forward.
Stats are probably comparable.

I still stand by what I said at the time.
His final season was (nearly) everything I wanted from an Albion season - Stay up - Good cup run - Double over Palace - If he'd finished above Palace it would have been perfect.

Tony's targets are a lot more demanding and far-sighted than mine, thank God.

I don't agree. Funny how we only see these posts after a loss.

What's limiting us is the quality of players we can attract and afford which is a problem every team has bar a handful. I'd argue that Potter has got more out of the players than many coaches would be able to get. They're playing very good football and creating lots of chances. It's not in GP's control when a player misses an absolute sitter.

Agree with most of that but it was in GP's control to decide what striking resources he started the season with. It was GP that decided we didn't need Tau, Zeqiri, Andone or AJ but that we did need to keep Locadia. In hindsight those decisions have proved disastrous. I doubt any of us would have retained Locadia ahead of AJ or Zeqiri in particular. But then we "don't see Locadia in training" :D

Working from PL seasons only

76 games

18 wins
22 draws
36 losses

Win - 23.68%
Draw - 28.94%
Loss - 47.37%

69 goals for (avg 0.91 per game)
114 goals against (avg 1.5 per game)

So similar win percentage but more defeats compared to draws and slightly worse goals scored / goals conceded per game

EDIT - Hughton's first season was actually largely Potter-esque, things took a dive in the second season though
