Only ever driven through the town a number of years ago however maybe like a few on here i have impressed and grateful for the way the town of Wootton Bassett has paid tribute and respect to the 'fallen' on their return to the UK as from Sept flights will be returning to RAF Brize Norton as opposed to RAF Lynham thus removing the Wootton Bassett cortege. I have no idea who or where this alteration has come from, however to me it is a disgracefull decision.

I would wholeheartedely agree with most of that, but if you don't know why the decision was made, how can you call it disgraceful ?

Maybe i am wrong, however from the Govt and MoD point of veiw Wootton Basset is not good P/R and the public start asking awkward questions like why ??

I understand that RAF Lyneham is closing and its function will pass to RAF Brize Norton, the base is expected to become a centre of excellence for Military Engineering, which would seem a more than reasonable reason to move the flights elsewhere.

Great tribute they've paid to our boys (and in one or two cases, girls). There was something a while ago about the town being renamed Royal Wootton Bassett because of this; not heard any more recently. One question though; will the RAF Counselling Centre be moving to Brize Norton too? All the hostages from Beirut were brought back through Lyneham and received extensive debriefing and counselling there. I do hope such services are not dumped in the name of cost saving (not making a party political point here). Also, Lyneham (I think - Gully perhaps you could correct me if I'm wrong) provides the base for the M4 rescue helicopter, which I have seen in action after someone went off the motorway. Do they have an alternative base if the RAF base closes?

Yes cost cuts Eason for closing Lynham also used as the base for the SAS "black flights". Due to the size of the runway required for some of the aircraft using Lynham , Brize is the only other alternative.

Still think it is a wonderful 'mark of respect' and yet everytime you see it done we all ask the same question why Iraq,Afghanistan Libya ?
