We did a walking food tour in Bangkok one evening which was excellent……great variety of local stuff. We stayed very near Lumpini Park which is so tranquil compared to everywhere else in the city and great for a stroll around. Avoid the Russians, they’re mostly obnoxious.

The fisherman village market in Koh Samui on a Friday and Saturday night.
Lots of lanterns and food/drink stalls. It was excellent when we went many years ago.

Bangkok… No my cup of tea. 2 nights was enough. Don’t pay for excursions to temples, 9 times out of 10 it’s a rip off.
Once you’ve seen one temple.. you've seen them all.

Chiange Mai - The elephant nature park sanctuary ran by Lek. Stay and help look after the elephants of which after logging, or distressed after being used as tourist attractions, or even injured through land mines get a proper good home to see out their days. They are awesome animals.

Street food never made us ill… but a burger and chips in an Irish bar nearly finished me off.. worst experience ever.

Enjoy

Do a cooking class in Chiang Mai, it's a lot of fun. As mentioned, the elephant nature park sanctuary is worth a visit too.

I quite enjoyed Bangkok but nothing really stood out as a must-do, other than visiting one of the big temples. It's fun just to walk around and explore the markets and stop for cheap food and beer.

My one tip with street food is make sure you see them cooking the meat in front of you. Avoid anything which has been sitting there ready to serve.

If you like a swanky cocktail bar that looks incredibly out of place to its surroundings look for the White Rabbit bar in Chiang Mai. Down a side road, look for the sign, & you basically have to go up through what looks like a derelict house to find a really decent cocktail bar. Worth it for a treat. Bit surreal considering the 'décor' of surrounding places.

Chiang Mai is very nice (albeit you'll still see plenty of dodgy old western guys with their Young Friends even there: just not as much as in Bangkok). You can do a cycling tour of the city which is a really nice way of seeing things.

Bangkok is...eye-opening. But a lot of fun. Cheap to get around but the traffic is always horrific so if you need to go anywhere by road, give yourself twice as much time as you think you need. Or use the SkyTrain or river shuttles. As much or as little nightlife as you can be arsed with. Loads of big malls if you (or your travelling companion....) like shopping. Make the most of the massage services, by which I mean the cheap as chips, brilliant Thai massages, not the happy ending type ones (well, unless that's your thing). You can tell the difference because all the ladies offering you a genuine massage will be dressed in sensible trouser suit uniforms or skirts, whereas the ladies offering additional services will be in much smaller outfits :)

One more thing: they are really into table tennis in Bangkok. Everywhere we went, especially around Patpong, they were offering us tickets to go and watch it. Must be like the national sport or something.

Had our honeymoon there many year ago.

Bangkok was disappointing. Really sleazy, full of late-middle-aged European men walking around with their teenage Thai 'girl-friends' 🤮, and we were repeatedly invited into shows to watch 'tricks' with ping-pong balls. I was also offered 'fucky fucky' (for a price) - my wife thought it was hilarious!

Chiang Mai was absolutely wonderful - so beautiful and relaxing after the noise and sleaze of Bangkok. The highlight of our visit to Thailand, which ended with a week in Phuket.
