I surpose if you look on the bright side, having just forked out 90 quid for three lords tickets I dont have to fork out another 50-60 odd quid this month to go to the testimonial game

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
I also hear that Palace would have played us but we held them off waiting to hear about other clubs so they had to go ahead and organise their pre season.

I feel sorry for Kerry, but can understand that the club were RIGHT to wait for Arsenal as this would have been a gala day for all concerned.

Wasnt part of the reason Palace got turned down because of the cost of policing the game

Not wishing to offend Ferret or anyone else on the Committee by bringing this up again, but surely some sort of squad going across the whole of Mayo's career would have been very appropriate and easier to arrange than trying to pick a big club? The likes of Storer, Case, Minton, Reinelt etc have mostly got normal jobs now and would probably be chuffed to play in a one-off like this. I'm sure Kerry would still have some of their contact details - he's still good mates with Reinelt, for example. Plus the club is still in touch with most players from the last five seasons. It would have been great to get Arsenal, but I don't get why this avenue wasn't pursued instead of the Panathinaikos one, as a game against them at £20 a ticket wouldn't have sold out - you'd need someone like Arsenal unless you wanted a repeat of the Charlton game for Mal Stuart and Jock Riddell where we got about 4,000. They could even have arranged a provisional date with the ex-players in the event of Arsenal losing the Money League Final.

Was the original date called in by the ODPM?

Or have LDC launched a challenge because part of Kerry's left ankle is technically located in Lewes?

Quick answer to this point.

This was considered by the committee as, unlike a match against another club, it would have been something that the Committee could have taken on themselves.

However, by the time it became clear that the club were not able to secure the desired level of opposition (and Dick Knight, Martin Perry, Martin Hinshelwood and Derek Allan did their level best in this respect) then it was also too late to secure the right level of "All-Star".

With due respect to the other names mentioned, we would have wanted to include Peter Ward, Bobby Zamora, Gary Stevens, Gordon Smith, Dave Beasant, Adam Virgo and Danny Cullip as a minimum (all of whom incidentally had been sounded out at various times during the year).

As it happens, we would still expect the majority of these, plus one or two others, to be included in the Brighton side when the Testimonial does eventually take place.

Presumably Mark McGhee also assisted here?

absolutely, these are just the guys I have been speaking to directly about the testimonial match - I am certain that Mark McGhee was doing his best behind the scenes to get something sorted
