Too many slow, loose, friendly overs at the wrong time . It was always going to be an unlikely win though

Decent enough effort by England in the 4th innings. The failure to wrap up India’s first innings probably the difference in this game. Still a cracking series though.

England will undoubtedly feel that the series has been a huge missed opportunity. They've lost two Tests from winning positions, and could have the series won now. (Though equally, India would counter that they lost the first Test from a winning position)

Real mixed bag - some bad cricket and bad decisions in key sessions - but also some superb individual performances, and the emergence of a couple of young spinners with real promise.

India should be delighted, mind - they've won a series with a couple of their biggest names missing, and the 'finds' of Jurel, and most especially Jaiswal, mean they look well stocked for the next few years. Jaiswal could be an absolute world-beater.

I thought Jaiswal looked decent when they played in South Africa a couple of months ago but he’s taken it to a whole new level in this series.

Series would have beenb completely different of Stokes could have bowled some overs. We've done well to stay in it, frankly, with such an inexperienced spin attack.

Hard to know what the take aways will be.

Whilst we take a break from the Test thumpings, a little quiz question for you dear friends.

In 1985, Which England spinner played in his first and only one day series, captaining England at the age of 44, 20 years after his Test debut ?

Who was the Sussex player who also got caps in the same series ?

Errm, in amid all the Euro excitement there is a aperitif in disappointment in the early hours tomorrow in the form of the 5th Test.

The match is in Dharamsala, which sounds more like a Chef's Special at the Taj than a ground for a red ball battle.

Talk of England playing three seamers.

The series has turned out to be the damp squib many of us anticipated. But one last hurrah before we move to the summer. Or rather, three weeks time when the new season starts. I think it's August when we take the next break...

Donkey stat fart: England have scored as many centuries as India on this relatively new ground (2 each). Apparently the ground is at altitude, so expect some huge hits.

Hartley & Bashir keep their places in team. Only change is Wood in for Robinson.

England team for fifth Test: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (capt), Ben Foakes (wk), Tom Hartley, Mark Wood, James Anderson, Shoaib Bashir.

Jo'burg is also at altitude [The Wanderers & Centurion on the highveld] and the ball defo moves around more in the air ....

Extra seamer might make sense, but look at the deck first to see if that's spin-friendly.

Dead-rubber really, shame, as we have played well in some sessions but very poorly in others.

Wonder if we might see Stokes bowl? Feels like the best venue for it

Ok so which England player/coach has told the press "we are still in this" after close of play today ?

Purely selfishly I don’t want Jimmy to pick up his 700th wicket here because I have tickets for Lords

Good to see Bairstow fingers his usual T20 approach. S/R over 100 out for less than 50.
What an awful batting display again.
