Was a rough day. Mum was hysterical as the house got trashed and my brother sent me a text to say he was fine, he was in his car driving in town when it happened. Then the mobile network got overloaded and I received the same text every 20 minutes for the rest of the day. Yeah I get it bro, you're fine.
About 5 seconds after it stopped shaking the girl in my office next to me got a text from her partner who was in the town square saying the Cathedral had fallen down and people were crushed and dead around him. Gave it a very serious edge for the rest of the day.

My son has been playing cricket in Christchurch this winter,.. he is right in the middle of town near Hagley Park,.... just heard he is fine though,... fortunately he wasn't near any big or old buildings at the time,..... thats two quakes in 6 months,... he will certainly remember his stint in NZ thats for sure.

NZ has hundreds of earthquakes every year. Christchurch is getting it bad - tragic
Thats the point. They don't really.
Unlike Greece and Turkey, who as they get earthquakes everyday, places like New Zealand wont have the builtding regulations to provide earthquake proof buildings. I was in a 6.6 earthquake 2 years ago here and it was frighting and very exciting, my point beign that only a couple of older building fell down and nobody was hurt. It went on for about 3 mins. Constant shaking and then suddenly the whole earth moved from left to right and then left again in a giant shift. Truely bizzar.
Thoughts with our New Zealand cousins.

To be fair, I didn't realise until I visited the place. They're actually quite well setup for quakes. I was caught in one in Wellington which shook the hotel I was staying in. It was quite good fun, but it was relatively small... the one today had an epicentre only 5kms from Christchurch city centre & it was quite shallow. Not good

A mate of mine lives just outside Christchurch, he moved there from the UK in Oct, thankfully him, his wife and son are all ok though. He's due back in the UK next week for a wedding too.
He experienced an aftershock from the September quakes not long after moving over there, said that was pretty scary so I dread to think what he went through earlier today.

Actually, with 14,000 earthquakes a year, New Zealand has some of the strictest building regulations in the world. Doesn't do much to protect the older buildings though, especially when an earthquake that size is only 5km deep and an epicentre 10km away from the city centre.
Sure.
I've been doing some reading and Christchruch is, including the one in Sept, having its first ever, if you like, 'batch' of earthquakes. Hence why many of the building are made of stone.

He sure will! The crazy thing is while NZ is very quake prone, Christchurch was meant to be one of the safer cities, no one even knew a faultline existed anywhere near it before the 7.1.

Much of New Zealand probably wouldn't exist if it weren't for the earthquakes. Wkiipedia:

I sat watching the news this morning and I don't know why it really hit me suppose its because they are all part of our great commonwealth family they and the Ausies are really getting their share of the bad things.
