Is it true that the person blocking the lifeboat and shouting abuse was a fisherman, as in boat fisherman?

If I have it right, they were going out to rescue people in the water, visible from the shore who had come out of a collapsed boat. So they were clearly refugees.
However, blocking the launch when they can see the people who need rescuing means these ***** would have been happy to literally watch them drown while holding back their only means of rescue.

Luckily their ridiculous stand failed and the launch went ahead.

Fair enough - I'd not read that. If you're right though, and the **** trying to stop the launch could literally SEE the people struggling in the water, then that is next level psychopathy. That is a properly odd, and dangerous, mindset, and someone like that shouldn't be walking the streets. I'm really not joking, either. Horrible psychopathic **** needs locking up.

To add balance to the people of Hastings, there is a group who help refugees as soon as they hit the shore with warm drinks, and dry clothing.
Local business played their part in today’s operation. One Old Town pub responded with trays of chips, and a café with hot drinks, all without charge. Hot food and drinks are an essential part of any first response.

Hastings Supports Refugees has recently convened an Emergency Response Team after a similarly tiny boat washed up on a nearby beach two months ago when an HSR member happened to be there and witnessed what happened then – the boat being held on the water by Border Force for more than three hours, and no official provision of food, drinks or clothing.

It is a criminal act to prevent an emergency vehicle from rescuing someone. The lifeboat is covered by this law (2006).

So where were the police? Surely they should have been present to ensure that the RNLI volunteers could go about their business and to arrest anybody breaking the law by obstructing them?

I wasn't there, so can't confirm our deny anything in that report. But to put you in the wider picture, for Hastings Observer, think Daily Mail.

The RNLI themelves called the police, so it is in their hands.

Yes, I read the article and saw the marvellous effort by people helping these refugees but, to actually block the launch of a lifeboat ? Thats really despicable. That is what hurts me the most, an organisation dedicated to saving lives and supporting safety at sea and on the beaches that is entirely voluntarily funded and some heartless individual decides to do what they did, truly shocking.

It is, indeed, truly shocking. But these people are effectively encouraged by the hysterical headlines in The Express and Daily Mail (and others). Plus the government has introduced a Bill which would actually criminalise the RNLI. Incredible. On the latter point, I think they are in the process of amending the Bill to remove that risk....but if anyone on here feels like supporting the various groups providing shore-line help to arriving refugees, it'll be worth reading the small print of the new Nationality & Borders Bill to check what you can and can't do legally. Having said that, I'd be very happy to risk breaking English law to help a refugee in distress.

I like France. Would happily live there.

Thats not the point though is it! They come here for a variety of reasons some because they can speak English and feel this would be a better home. Some have the last vestiges of their shattered families living here. Whatever the reason what is not 'Newsworthy' is that a lot of people do claim asylum in France (Germany etc).
