In my recent experience the Vancouver locals are getting increasingly pushed out by the Chinese (or at least feel like they are).........'it won't be long before they've taken over the city completely' to quote my pal. Hate crimes against the Asian community massively increasing etc...........

https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2021-vancouver-canada-asian-hate-crimes/

Canada had 2,669 reported hate crimes in 2020 for a population of 38m
https://globalnews.ca/news/8063163/hate-crimes-rise-canada-2020/

England & Wales had 124,091 hate crimes in 2020 for a population of about 56m
https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/hate-crime-england-and-wales-2020-to-2021/hate-crime-england-and-wales-2020-to-2021

It isn't even close to comparable

You must wonder why so many people are desperate to come here, then. Perhaps other people don't hate the UK as much as some Brits do.

As pointed out here, we are hardly the favourite destination, we are WAY down the list

But carry on regardless

Are the numbers increasing fast in Vancouver though, or are my friends there lying ?

‘Last year, more anti-Asian hate crimes were reported to police in Vancouver, a city of 700,000 people, than in the top 10 most populous U.S. cities combined. With almost 1 out of every 2 residents of Asian descent in British Columbia experiencing a hate incident in the past year, the region is confronting an undercurrent of racism that runs as long and deep as the historical links stretching across the Pacific’

I know what you mean and I totally agree. However there is the other side of the coin, the ones that make you proud to be British: the people who are meeting the refugees on the beaches and trying to look after them. Trying to prove that we are a decent, caring society. We need to support them (and the RNLI obviously). Not everyone in Hastings is a neo-Nazi ****.

Yes, I read the article and saw the marvellous effort by people helping these refugees but, to actually block the launch of a lifeboat ? Thats really despicable. That is what hurts me the most, an organisation dedicated to saving lives and supporting safety at sea and on the beaches that is entirely voluntarily funded and some heartless individual decides to do what they did, truly shocking.

Not carrying on at all - just posing a question, one to which I have no answers.

I have a few suggestions, but I posted them on the refugee thread in the bear pit and I know you don't go there

I would suggest that getting back the UK's seat on the management board for Europol - the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation - and getting British officers access to the Europol database would be measures that could reduce the issue and would help the UK’s and EU's efforts to dismantle immigrant smuggling networks. Reinstating or replacing the much maligned Dublin regulation would certainly also help. Also, if we could improve international relations with the countries across the channel I'm sure we would be more likely to find successful joint operations and solutions.

It may just be coincidence but all these things going seemed to have coincided with the three fold (and growing) increase in the last 11 months.

I don't know how we would go about that though ???

There are many, many people helping refugees and welcoming them to GB. A quick google search has some brilliant success stories.

The nitwits blocking a lifeboat launch need locking up. Embarrassing.

As an aside, good to see a clean thread pointing out the good that people do. My thread got quickly swamped by the mob moaning about foreigners, well done OP.

Not just ***** either - but bizarrely stupid *****. They literally had zero idea WHO was actually in distress, that the lifeboat was attempting to help.

If I have it right, they were going out to rescue people in the water, visible from the shore who had come out of a collapsed boat. So they were clearly refugees.
However, blocking the launch when they can see the people who need rescuing means these ***** would have been happy to literally watch them drown while holding back their only means of rescue.

Luckily their ridiculous stand failed and the launch went ahead.

I think I have read that right.

Whether you've read it right or not is really beside the point.

Who would stop unpaid volunteers from risking their lives to try and save others from dying ?

Just think about that.

I wonder if the people who blocked a lifeboat were a few weeks ago complaining about people on the M25 blocking ambulances?

As an aside, I’m always surprised how many people don’t know how to contact the RNLI/Coastguard. It’s 999 as any other emergency service. Or of you are in another European country and don’t know the emergency services number it’s 112, whatever country you are in, you’ll be put through to emergency services on that number. Ask for the coastguard.

A useful app, esp if you are abroad and don’t know your exact location/postcode etc is What3words. It will give you the unique three word location identifier for wherever you are in the world from Hastings to the Arctic. Accurate to three metres I believe. Encourage kids to get it if they are out and about a lot.

As an example, the Amex is; Tend. Crop. Belly :)

I'm fairly sure that in the first instance you contact the Coastguard, they then contact the RNLI and the air/sea rescue unit depending on the situation.

Yes. You dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

I wonder if the individual(s) blocking lifeboats have a history of posting things like "All Lives Matter" on social media :moo:

Well done Hastings people. It is inspiring to hear about people helping others in this way.

If only this stuff was louder than the counter nonsense peddled by some.

Inspirational stuff.
