Another sad day in football

Telford lose Conference spot

Telford finished 12th in the Conference last season
Telford will drop out of the Conference and go into liquidation after efforts to bring in an investor failed.
Rod Butcher, a partner in Birmingham-based firm Moore Stephens Corporate Recovery, revealed it was the only option left to the Bucks.

"We have advised the directors that the only choice now is to cease trading and go into liquidation," said Butcher.

"At the close of the season the club had no income and could not meet debts to the players and other creditors."

The wheels have been set in motion with regard to the formation of a new club

Telford United Supporters Limited

He added: "We will now work with the directors so that we can achieve the best possible settlement for the club's creditors.

"We are also still looking for a buyer or investor who could resurrect the club."

The club, which was founded in 1872, was thrown into crisis in March, when former chairman Andrew Shaw's Miras Contracts business collapsed.

A statement from Telford United Supporters Limited admitted the news was a massive blow but said football in the town would continue.

"We are deeply saddened at the outcome and we have been shocked by the apparent financial mis-management of the club prior to 25th March 2004," it read.

"The wheels have been set in motion with regard to the formation of a new club which should be confirmed within the next 24 hours.

"This will hopefully provide the vehicle for football in Telford to re-enter into non-league football, the level of which is as yet unknown."

Yes, they have. It's now owned by the Bank of Scotland...

I work in Telford and I must say that it is a big shame.
The Royal Bank of Scotland did not help the situation much as they own the lease on the land. They would only renew it on a yearly basis, that went against them too.

That is very sad news, I was chatting with a bloke who had been a physio with Telford a couple of years back, he believed that they were a well run club who were easily capable of making it into the league. I have to admit that I also thought they were heading in the right direction, the media coverage around their game with Millwall appeared to back this up, despite the problems with their pitch.

I was travelling back to Gloucester this afternoon with a colleague and we were chatting in the car about footy, in particular how well run some of the non-league clubs were and if some of the larger teams dropped out because of their financial problems there would always be someone able to replace them, unfortunately Telford will have to regroup like Aldershot did.

Very sad. Remember them going on a great FA Cup run in 1985, around the time I was first getting really into football. Then had a few dealings with them when I lived in Birmingham a few yesars back and ex-Everton striker Wayne Clarke was their manager. Friendly chap, friendly club. Let's hope the supporters' club starts to thrive like AFC Wimbledon seem to be doing.

Everyone at Supporters Direct, and I'm sure across the trust movement, would like to express their sorrow at the liquidation announced today of Telford United.

The past few weeks has seen a hectic schedule to set up the Trust - with the brilliant support and work of their Development Officer, Jacqui Forster, and Phil Tooley - and also a series of highly successful fundraising events.

In the end it seems that there were just too many problems for the Trust to be able to prevent this from happening, with the attitude of a small minority of the playing staff being cited for their refusal to come to a settlement over wages.

I know everyone's best wishes will be with the Trust and Telford United fans as they seek to re-establish themselves, and I know that we will do all we can here - and I'm sure that goes for all of you - to ensure that Telford United continues as a senior club in this country.

The trust now run the Telford FC website which can be found at:

If you want to send a good luck message, then you can email here:

The club was part of a series of companies owned by one person, and this millionaire owner put players on massive contracts of upwards £3500 a week on gates of 1700. I think it probably says that millionaire owners paying unsustainable wages have a habit of kind of cocking up football clubs. Apparently the Millwall FA Cup match didn't help, but the damage was done well before that; besides, if the repeated postponement of one match causes your club to go into liquidation, and the fans and community lose what they hold dear, then that is one badly run football club.

I hope he's ashamed of himself, and that those fans get out there and show just how much better they can do it
