With respect, how do you know this was a drug crime? My money is on some fragile nob doing what he imagines he is supposed to do when disrespected. But we don't know, do we?

What were the stats in Sussex 20 years ago on knife crimes and murder rates? Has it gone down, up or remained static?
We should be seeing it ( and rightly expecting them to reduce as with all crimes), to come down in a modern western society, but would be genuinely interest to see numbers.

I can't find any stats to back it up but I feel like Brighton was rather more stabby in the 80s.
And an absolute murder hotbed in the 30s.
