Funny how I've never had any problems with Norton, mind you I don't download much porn :lolol:

AVG is ok but fails to pick up on some viruses, have used it in the past and then ran NOD 32 and it picked up on a shit load of stuff that AVG had missed, Also NOD 32 Takes up a lot less systems resources and also updates its virus defenitons more frequently.
Its not free but in my opinion is the best there is.

Great, thanks Ridda, by the way, what is your email address again, oh I remember , ridda@norton.com

Seriously, I don't doubt that Norton is a good product, it better had be, but to me it is all-consuming, as if they are taking over your laptop, they overcomplicate it, and prey on folks fears, but pound for pound, AVG is a better bet, in my view

Please read more carefully NOD 32 IS NOT NORTON.

Me neither. On both counts! But Norton is only used on the PCs since it's far too invasive on the Mac.

What ? Porn ? I suppose the sight of a pear[sic] is offensive to an Apple.

Yep. It won't even tolerate a Nice Pear. As for melons, it won't begin to go there.

Clearly squash is out then. Still, it might still be a little fruity.

Have to agree here.

NOD32 is a real star. Definitely knows what it's doing, intercepts anything before you even know it's started downloading, and quietly hums away in the background using about half the system resources of even Messenger.

Gets my thumbs up seal of approval for what it's worth anyway.

As for Firewalls, Outpost is starting to mack me off, although it's range of features is certainly impressive. Never liked ZoneAlarm. What else might people recommend?

Hardware firewall. Get a good quality DSL/Cable/whatever router, and it'll have a good quality hardware firewall built in. I've no software firewalls on any of my machines

Unfortunately I have a Wanadoo Livebox, is this really likely to protect me? At all?

should be able to put another router or a Sonicwall between it and you, although by then port forwarding is going to get FUN if you use filesharing, etc.

f*** that. Port forwarding has been a nightmare on the thing ever since we've had it. Orange even sent us a new Livebox since, but we're too afraid to switch over for fear of losing all the precious precious settings.

Thought that I would resurrect this thread as I have been having mega probs with Norton.

It has recently asked me several times to reactivate it by inputting the product key. It is done this so many times that the key as exceeded it's maximum number of uses and so Norton isn't working. Their oh so helpful help pages has suggested that I parcel install disk etc up and send it to their European office in Dublin where they will pontificate over it for up to 3 weeks apparently. Thanks Norton.

So I have now taken the advice of various folks and am using AVG anti virus, plus their anti spyware and rootkit downloads (all free). Have also reactivated my Windows Firewall, run Spybot and AdAware weekly and also have downloaded Windows Defender. Someone has also suggested Kaspersky anti virus (not free but currently on offer) - anyone use this and is it any good.

Have I gone OTT with my security, have I too much, not enough or about right???
Comments welcomed.

....And I do turn my computer on and off regurlarly as well!!

AVG is fine, just update it regularly, and no probs.
Microsoft have a firewall of their own, and there are others - and make sure you always have one up.

Ad-Aware is great for getting rid of cookies and spyware sort of stuff.

I just tried CrapCleaner, and it 'seemed' to help, but I do disc Cleanup every few months as well.
