I think this is a really important game for our chances of qualifying for Europe. Liverpool are more than capable of winning the cup so my worry is we finish seventh and the scouse buggers finish 8th or 9th but win the cup, thus taking the last European place.

For that reason, along with the fact that we have a genuine shot at winning it, I'd like us to go strong and give ourselves a good shot at beating Liverpool. It'd also be a good old days moment if we can take four points off them in the league as well as knock them out of the cup.

I imagine Steele will get the start in goal, there's a decision to be made in central defence - do we give Van Hecke another go or bring in Webster or Veltman.

With his suspension agaisnt Bournemouth the following week Ally Mac has to start, possibly allowing Caicedo to have a rest. Although if Caicedo has the day off NSC will go into meltdown.

I'd look at something like:

Steele

Veltman
Webster(if fit, if not)/Van Hecke
Dunk
Estupinan

Ally Mac
Gross

March
Sarmiento
Mitoma

Welbeck

Strange to say this as it’s Liverpool, but if we play a weaker Charlton style team, then it’s a potential banana skin. They will go full strength, and want revenge. We need to go full strength & make it a repeat of last time.

My guess is that Liverpool will change their approach (doh)
Firstly they will have very closely studied how we play out the press and they are going to try and catch us out there. Secondly while they are going to be pressing more intelligently trying to second guess our movement and not going on the triggers we set them I expect this to be very intermittent. They'll drop into a medium block most of the time to compress space for our playmakers.
I don't see lamptey starting RB as we're going to need them to tuck in and help play out and provide security there. Estupinan is too good to not play his usual game on the left else we could have lamptey and a wildcard at LB tucking in.
Though really I haven't a Scooby.

Because it's a cup game, and that's what we always do?
Yep when it's against lower league sides not Liverpool, maybe if we had a tight schedule (we don't,) lots of injured players (we don't), hadn't just butt hurt their pride (oh how we did) and didn't have a chance of going quite a way in the comp and maybe even winning it (we do).

(that's what I think it will be. I'd select Sanchez to start in goal)

Apart from Steele - he will pick his strongest team - no different to if this was a PL match.
