Harley. KLL and Dicker are not doing nearly enough for me at the moment, so drop out of the squad. It's quite an interesting challenge, picking a side for us. The squad has no balance. Three left wingers, one injured right winger, no in form attacking midfielders and only one genuine defensive midfielder. Not easy to fix this, but someone HAS to play up top with CMS and they have to hit him earlier down the channels.

That's a good summary and we've defo got to mix up our game to get CMS seeing more of the ball. As someone suggested on another post he must feel that he's got some sort of communicable disease the way he spends the entire match on his own.

Still convinced Gus will get it sorted but we've limited options and the usual suspects don't do it for me

In attacking midfield we seem to have loads of options, but too many seem to be very similar or not quite good enough. In defensive midfield we have one option and he can't do it on his own!

I'd love to see us mix it, make more of CMS's running (look at the penalty that he won out of nothing at Cardiff) but Gus seems reluctant to let this happen and there's little point him winning the ball if there is no one within 40 yards of him.

When will Brez get another go? Ankergren isn't helping, and his distribution is bloody terrible at the moment. In fact distribution from the back is generally poor, and we're being caught out on pace as well. Is it me or have I seen opposing midfielders run right past us, and get 10 yards ahead before we respond?Suited League 1 quite well when we could punish other teams for their mistakes, but we're playing too deep in this division. When we push forward we look class, but I hate all this passing around at the back waiting for them to come at us garbage. We can play great attacking football, but we are well weak at the back.

Wingers away from Home?

pretty conclusive that the majority agree Vicente should now be starting, mainly in the middle, this would be great

Does not look match-fit, up to the pace.

Gonna pay attention to the Champions League highlights to see how many of the goals come from a cross from the wings, how many set pieces, and how many long punts into the channels (not many for the last one?)

How many shredded through the middle of the opposing defence etc.

I'd go.

Ankergren
Calde Greer Cook Painter
Bridcutt Vincelot
Barnes Vicente Noone
CMS

Subs: KLL, Hoskins, Navarro, Dicker and Brez.
I'd go with that. Vincelot impressed in the midfield role against Gills, Pompey & Cardiff, and it clearly needs a bit of a shake-up as we've been overrun there in recent games.

Only about 28% of chances tonight were created through the wingers in open play. About half the goals came about by passing the ball to the forward in the channels (or nearer the centre of goal). And 15% or so by shredding the ball through the opposing defence (i.e. cutting inside).

What does it all mean? We could get away without playing a winger in away matches. It might be better to keep two up front and forgo the winger? That means we would have no-one on the wing. At least against Ipswich. Buckley, I hope would be fit after the international break.

Best performance? Cardiff away. Team, Cardiff away. If we start like we have lately (excluding the first 10 mins of last night), i hope Poyet is brave enough to make quick, positive changes.

OK if Vicente is fit enough. But who is going to take the corners now Elliott Bennett has gone?

Vicente if fit, however if he isn't fit enough to start then I'd play Harley, so he would just take over duties. Not impressed by Dicker recently I'm afraid.

OMT or YGH ? (Right Back) v Ipswich

This should help the publicity

OMT

Young Argentinian full-back Mauricio Taricco arrived at Ipswich Town from Argentinos Juniors for around £150, 000 in September 1994, making his debut soon after in a desperate 3-0 home defeat by Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup. His league debut did not arrive until the following season, in a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion in Division One on 26th August 1995. Taricco quickly made an impression as a solid defender blessed with immaculate passing ability and considerable attacking flair, and he went on to make 47 appearances that season. Mauricio began 1996-97 with his first goal for Ipswich in a 5-2 win over Reading. His burgeoning talent earned him the supporters vote for player of the year, and he confirmed his popularity with a goal against rivals Norwich City on the evening that he collected the award. Ipswich's 2-0 victory that night went a long way towards securing their place in the play-offs. There they were edged out by Sheffield United and Taricco's disappointment was clear to see. Mauricio made another 53 appearances as Ipswich missed out in the play-offs again in 1997-98. An eventful season saw them enjoy a thrilling League Cup run, in which Taricco scored against both Manchester United - a superb long-range, curling effort - and Chelsea. Continued good form at the start of 1998-99, which included a spectacular goal following a run from inside his own half against Crystal Palace.

He has not scored since 1994.

YGH

I think CMS and Barnes have to play much closer together. Look what happened in the second half against Leeds. They were miles apart again last night. How can you form a fruitful partnership like that?

No one on the Wing ?

I am not surprised, but I do not think we are good enough to get away with two out and out wingers in the side. (You cannot play on both wings at the same time!) For an away match I doubt we are good enough for one out and out winger.

So to me it is one of the following: Noone, Lu lua, Vicente. And if Buckley is fit, I am inclined to play him instead.

You can , of course, play a winger and Barnes can drop deep, But then as somebody said, CMS and Barnes are too far apart.

Total football exponents will say that every player is an utility players and they can play in any position, the winger is expected to be able to defend, the centre half make a sublime pass, the anchor man dribble through the opposing defence. Alas for the Albion it is not true. We have got a lot of players who are not very good at challenging for the ball and if we play too many of them we lose out in midfield. Great at home against the weaker sides.

Jewel has been around as a manager too long to be tricked into an inferior attitude. It will be interesting what Gus will do?

Valencia > 2004 played 4-2-3-1 with Vicente on the left of the front three. This system has had has some strong detractors and I think it is awful.

It very well be this system that Albion played in the end game against Doncaster and they may have tried to play it in other games?

The only advantage of this formation is that it is relatively simple to play. To me it is nearer to 4-2-4 and this went out in the sixties.
