Ermmm ........we do want to win a trophy soon, don't we? I suppose it would be quite exciting, Sussex-wise, if Crawley had a spectacular League Cup run, but ....................................
You really don't think the team I posted is good enough to beat Crawley comfortably?! They're all first team players!

Not first choice ones; we've tried to 'get away' with second string/youngsters/just back from injury needs running in players before......and lost. The point is, it's not our strongest XI - and Crawley comfortably beat our U21s last week, and that was nowhere near their first XI.

I agree we shouldn't be playing our U21s, as they only drew to Crawley (and although Crawley were the better side they only won the 'bonus' point in the penalty shootout). However, there's a big difference between our U21s and the players on the bench yesterday and other first team players in need of a game.

Crawley drew against our U21s and won the separate point for penalties.

Point taken - but as Freddo said, they were much better than us - and it was mostly their second string. The players aren't tired yet - or shouldn't be - and there's an international break not far away. Let's make certain, not take chances - again.

Whilst correct they were comfortably better than us. Crawley won't be mugs and if we play a second string we could lose but I imagine it will be a sensible mix of first team and giving some minutes to fringe players.

Comfortably?
On penalties?

I think you make a fair point of not wanting to take unnecessary risks, as with the squad that we have we really should be targeting a deep run in the cups. But for me this is a game that we need to start the likes of Webster, Igor, Baleba, Adingra, Ayari, Enciso, and Sarmiento.

We play Crawley, then Arsenal and are then into an international break that not many of our players will be involved in. Keep the momentum. Maybe maybe 2 or 3 changes but I’d go with a very strong team.

I'm expecting plenty of changes.

Likely to see the 9 players from the bench on Saturday start with a couple of extras from the squad getting a run out. Plus a completely different 9 named on the bench who didn't feature Vs Man U

There could be a number of players VERY close to a loan move. This is tricky for the club. We want to rest 1st team players for next weekend but at the same time, we may not want to cup tie players like Rushworth, O’Mahony and Cozier-Duberry.

Then there are players we might be selling. Naylor has highlighted that the likes of Moder and Dahoud are looking for a new challenge.

This is surely too soon for Kadıoğlu and O’Riley to start but could they make the bench?

Then there is Lamptey. If he is staying, we may as well play him but no news on an extended contract, only rumours of interest from other clubs.

I suspect Wieffer misses out as we won’t want to risk him after his knock and likewise Milner and Gilmour need a rest after all the running yesterday, hopefully WBG’s rest is not on a plane to Naples.

So………

————————Steele————————-
Offiah——-Webster(C)——Igor——-Samuels
—————-Baleba———-Ayari—————-
Gruda———-—Sarmiento———-—Adingra
———————-Enciso—————————-

---------------Steele
Veltman Van Hecke Webster Lamptey
----------Gilmour Baleba
-----Enciso Sarmiento Adingra
---------------Pedro

My selection principles

Don't trouble any of the oldies for this one, apart from Veltman, who gets a half at RB and Hinsh gets the second half
No risks with injured players like Wieffer or Gruda. If they couldn't make the bench at the weekend then let's not risk them here
This will come a bit late for O'Reilly and Ferdi I guess
If Sarmiento, is offski, then Ayari comes in that spot
Let's go strong, get our goals, then put on Duffus, Offiah etc
Gilmour is officially staying. At least he is in my brain
And play Rutter somewhere ....... oh no ... hang on ...... i've just checked the thread and apparently he's cup tied

We have to win, to keep us playing enough to keep the squad busy. But if we never play the backup players against teams below the PL, what's the point?

No mucking about here - play the strongest team we can
Indeed. This is the biggest East vs West clash since the Cold War!!!!

I've been trying to get AI to come up with a promo poster for the game:
