The U18s are available - they haven't got a match until Saturday. Let's just get out of this winnable competition with a European place up for grabs as soon as possible, eh? Who wants a cup anyway? Not counting the Sussex county cup, we haven't won a cup for over a hundred years - surely we can be patient for another hundred years or so for a bit of silverware?

I'd like to see some fringe players but not too many. I accept that we have to wrap some of them in cotton wool because the league is so valuable these days, but equally the dividend for being a EPL also-ran should be to have a real chance in the cups. Therefore I hope we play a team that looks a bit unfamiliar but still on paper looks slightly too good for Cardiff.
Sanchez, Dunk, Bissouma and Maupay should be nowhere near Cardiff, but equally nor should fringe players who aren't knocking on the door of the EPL match day squad.

Could potentially see Richards playing as our man up top, he's mobile and has an eye for goal (10 in 41 for Doncaster in EFL last year) and he might find it difficult to break into our midfield but we clearly need options up front.
Man Utd will not be getting Bissouma in this window unless they offer a mind blowing amount and that will far more than our 3rd best cb commanded

No one is "advocating team line-ups to lose". There's just huge disadvantages to playing the strongest team & big advantages to playing young/fringe players in this cup and thats why people, including Potter and pretty much every other PL manager, does it this way.
Most of the team line ups put forward as suggestions on this thread are teams set up to lose - and that's nothing to do with Potter, or what team Potter may or may not choose.

5 or 6 starters and 9 of the squad if you include Molumby (who is likely to leave) have now left the club, 3 - a year later - started against Watford,
Probably only Roberts and Steele likely to start tonight.

In your opinion yes.
I believe the fringe/young players of this squad is capable of giving Cardiff a very good match and quite possibly win.
Fair smattering of (at the time) first teamers in that line up - plus it was at home, and Portsmouth were much less of a threat than a Mick McCarthy managed Cardiff at their place!
Veltman, Burn, Bernardo (although not much lately), Pröpper, Stephens, Jahanbakhsh (just about), Groß and Mac Allister were all first team, so overall a pretty strong team. Didn't fanny about - got through. Hope Potter doesn't fanny about and put out a team too weak to beat Cardiff.
Yes, some in the team - but not all at once, as many have suggested. Apart from youth and lack if experience, a centre midfield that have never played together - not good; a back three who have never played together - not good. Yet many blithely believe that they will roll over a strong Mick McCarthy side on their own patch!
