Yes they are, but by choice.
I think Doug would like the same sort of fine imposed on the Teachers as Parents get when taking their Children out of School.

Which is an inconvenience that I am sure, despite what some might imply, no teachers are sat at home laughing about.
However I would imagine (and I have none of my own yet) that there are worse things in the world than having to spend a sunny day with your kids, and that having to take days off work occasionally to do this is part of the whole parenting thing!
Chuff me they don't know they're born. I've been working as a scientist for ten years after doing a degree and a masters at top universities and am just getting close to that level! Plenty of graduates are lucky to get £15k.
It's costing me nothing nor causing me any real inconvenience ( other than taking my daughter with me when I sign on ). BUT there are parents who are paying out on extra child care or using one of their 20 ( yes only TWENTY ) days holiday. They should be recompensed.

In what way are they not? Parents get fined 60 quid by the LEA, teachers are losing a day's pay which is being withheld by the LEA.
For what it's worth, I doubt many teachers are that supportive of the really tight rules on kids having days off for good reason - these come from the same government that they are striking against!

None of my friends earn that much some ten years after finishing uni. Those are incredible wages. In fact I think they're paid too much, if that's the case.
It's not unauthorised. They are holding a legal strike. What's unauthorised about that?

Too many parents think teachers are there for their convenience, purely to look after their kids while they go off and work. Teachers educate your children. They are fighting for better conditions in order to do this more effectively. No-one enters teaching as a means to earn a fortune. Yes, they get a good pension, so they should after spending 45 years teaching your children. They may well get a uni leaving salary that is fair, but the progression of pay is rather slow and they soon fall behind the average pay scale.

I wouldn't call Geography a science personally.
But anyway nail on head, teachers don't know how lucky they have it.
Disparity in wages is extraordinary. Teachers do not earn too much. Other professions earn far too much, because this society (not country) has its priorities all screwed up.
You can earn almost as much as an Office Manager as you can if you are a teacher. Teachers are realising this, which is why they are leaving the profession in large numbers after their first few years.

Teaching is a difficult job. Have you ever tried teaching an OAP how to use a computer, it can be very very frustrating. Think about doing that everyday to a class of 30+ pupils. Teaching is exhausting. On it's own if every kid was at the same ability it would be easy, but they are not, so teachers have to ensure even the slowest and most diffcult of kids get an education and come out with the very best grades. Teachers are not only teachers but they sometimes act as social workers too. At my wifes last school in Luton they ran a breakfast club, because believe it or not some kids where not getting fed because the parents didn't care. Teachers rounded up and bought the food out of their own pockets and ran the club. Not all teachers are lazy, greedy people. Like my wife they do the job because they love to teach and want to turn even the worst of kids in to good citizens. That is being hampered by politicians who know nothing about teaching sticking their noses in and changing the system, saying that education standards are falling and generally making teachers look like crap. I know 3-4 people who left the job in Luton because they simply couldn't cope with it mentally. Yes we all work hard, but you can't judge a teachers job unless you try it for yourself and just becasue you went to school doesn't mean you could a teachers job. It takes a special person, some who is patient, can handle the pressue, and can improve the results of kids year on year. Try it when you have 5 or 6 kids who don't want to learn and disrupt classes, they mess up your results for the rest of the class and make you look like a crap teacher.
