School's out for Spain training

The teachers are flying out to Marbella for a training conference
A school has admitted it is flying its teaching staff to Marbella for a four-day training trip.

Edensor Technology College, in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, said it would be closed on Thursday and Friday while teachers were in the Spanish holiday resort.

Staff are expected to discuss the school's new curriculum and plans to turn it into an academy.

The school said the Marbella trip was the "best value for money" compared to other UK and international venues.

The school, which has about 80 teaching staff, said it had sought quotes from nine venues in total and the conference was booked at the end of 2007.


The school will be closed for two days

The Andalucia Plaza Marbella Hotel, which the school has booked, said it charged roughly £635-a-day for conference facilities while a standard double room was charged at about £90-a-day.

Headteacher Richard Mercer said in a statement: "A full training programme, which is being led by reputable international speakers, is in place.

"We are investing in training our staff to ensure the continuity of quality education for our pupils."

A spokesman for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said the trip was a "matter for the school".



So they tried all the local Staffordshire venues including their own schools facilties and then the lightbulb went on and they thought................ hey I wonder about Marbella ?
How are they getting there as well........ no mention of that cost.

Lot of companies do it, it works out a lot cheaper. We take our whole consultancy (45-50 people) over to Marbella for team building every year. Nicer weather, great facilities, cheap booze etc.

Try teaching a class of 30 Secondary school kids in Luton, like my girlfriend does. Try to keep control when no one wants to listen.

Teachers do not, I repeat do not have an easy time. My girlfriend is working 60+ hours a week at the moment to keep up with reports, marking and ensuring kids get proper grades.

Last week she started at 7.30am and did not get home until 9.00pm due to parents evening, so not only do you have to put with kids in the day, you then get their parents having a pop in the evening as well.

So when a police officer or soldier gets killed on duty, you just say "Oh well, they chose that career. I'm sure they knew when they went into it that it would be a bit risky".

When you start teaching you don't realise the amount of hours you need to put in. Yes hours are 8.00 - 4.00pm but they don't tell about the extra hours you need to work.

I went out with a teacher for 7 years. She works very hard. She currently does a 60-65 hour week, just finished Ofsted, works at weekends with planning etc. Tough job. Okay they get long, paid holidays but a lot of teachers would rather have shorter breaks.

They`ve cancelled the jolly now because they have been rumbled. If its a private company they can do what they want but if its tax payers money then they should put 80 chairs in the school hall and sort out the overhead projector.

Another ridiculous sensationalist story. Perhaps the headteacher thought that a trip to Marbella would raise morale?

My sister teaches at a school in Brighton & Hove and morale is very low. The children are incredibly badly behaved. They inherit a bunch of 11 year olds with behavioural problems, the inability to speak/write/read properly, the vast majority do not want to learn anything and plenty have a disgraceful set of parents who show no interest in their children other than collecting the child benefit cheque.

A trip to Marbella sounds like a very good idea if it had a positive effect on the teachers. Oh but, teachers have it so easy. They have long holidays... :thud:
