On a serious note, I understand that the government is desparate to cut down on the Civil Service and the Revenue is hell bent on self destruction.

Local offices are being closed, they have thrown away the atlas and Sussex is now in Scotland, well, that's where Sussex work gets (or does not) done.
You can only contact HMRC by their 0845 telo's which are always engaged, although are open from 8.00am to 8.00pm.

Keep trying the phones, DON'T WRITE because it will just be left to rot in some warehouse. If you do write then head it up in BIG LETTERS as a COMPLAINT and also say that you have copied your MP.

The changes that are taking place are not the fault of your common or garden Fatty Tax Man. If/when you do get through to a real person (like at the Collectors, who do answer the phones) then you can still get some decent service.

The up side for tax payers is that the revenue is no longer a credable organisation and is in such a mess that, if you are late with sending in returns or the like, you can always claim that you did send it and it must have been lost!

No I'm not
On a serious note you're quite right about the IR being hell bent on self destruction. We joined up (or rather got took over by) Customs and Excise last year. WE HAVE TWO DIFFERENT COMPUTER SYSTEMS WHICH CAN'T COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER. How ****ing sensible is that ? We have different ways of working. They're closing most of our buildings down so in the end we'll be sitting on each others laps to get to one of the terminals which don't work properly. The IT has been outsourced to people who have no knowledge of our systems and who cannot be bothered to find out about them. I was without Outlook for 4 weeks last summer and have been without one of the most important tracing tools we have for 10 months now and nobody gives a shit . And yet we're supposed to give a good service. Morale is at rock bottom and going to get worse. There's job cuts, redundancies and an approved early retirement scheme which everyone is trying to get on but which allows nobody to actually leave so people just resign without a pension. The Labour gov't has a hell of a lot to answer for.
Sorry - rant over and i appreciate that nobody cares about the civil service but it is a bit disheartening when you try to give a good service and can't
