BBC News - Tax dodgers named on HMRC list

Tax dodgers are being named on a list published by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for the first time, as their affairs come under greater scrutiny.

The list highlights "deliberate defaulters" who were found during investigations by HMRC into affairs conducted after April 2010.

In these cases, the culprits had each not paid more than £25,000 of tax.

The naming and shaming exercise is part of a crackdown that includes larger fines and tracing previous evaders.

Decent idea, I think, assuming the list will grow. I wonder if the HMRC will have the balls to name high profile cases...

Quite. I can't see them naming anyone of any note, so perhaps it is not going to be the answer. It would be nice to see a big scalp.

I think the 'list' would be more effective if a mailshot was done locally by HMRC for each of the dodgers.

Long overdue, with tons of safeguards before someone is named.

It probably won't prevent tax crooks taking the gamble from cheating us, but just with crimes through the courts, these crooks will now be known in the public domain.

and immediatly we see the problem, people dont/cant understand the difference between evasion and avoidance or think they should be treated the same. reading the article, its clear they will be naming those prosecuted for evasion, not just a list of people/companies that newspapers think havent paid as much as they think they should have.
