[Albion] Tariq Lamptey - the best Brighton player none of us will see?

Well, you say that. I was in the back row of ESU and he is only 2 inches tall so I only saw a moving dot.

Bloody fast dot though wasn't it? He had to cover for Duffy when they had a counter attack.

Here's my thought process on the matter

Thought 1 = "how much money would Tony Bloom want, to think that selling Lamptey is a the right thing for Brighton and Hove Albion?"
Thought 2 = "bloody hell, that' a mind bending quantity of cash, how much did it cost to build the Amex again?"
Thought 3 = "OK, how many clubs are there that could conceivably pay that sort of cash in the global pandemic?"
Thought 4 = "Who is playing right back or RWB for those clubs at the moment?"
Thought 5 = "OK then, really Is Tariq going to get in a team in front of, TAA, Pavard, Meunier, Cuadrado, Carvajal? All of those experienced full internationals with major nations?, when he's never even made a full England squad yet?"
Thought 6 = "Is Tariq the sort who's going to down tools to get a dream move?"
Thought 7 = "Won't be long before I get my shot in the arm and i'll be able to see, possibly the best player ever to play for Brighton from my seat in WSU. Can't wait"
Stop it with your logic. We'll have none of that here, it's NSC!

I agree.

This with cow bells on, we are a much better prospect now and why leave a top "six club" to gain playing time and then jump ship back to a "top six club" only to probably be a rotation squad player, no top six side would guarantee Lampty or White a starting position week in week out. I very much think we will get at least two seasons out of both players by which time we may also be in a very different position ourselves.
Also agree.

By all accounts and from what I've seen, Tariq is a very sensible, level headed lad.

He came here so that he could play football in the Premier League. He's doing that and absolutely ripping it up.

He must be totally buzzing (ridiculous sending off aside, although having a game off might be a good thing in the long run) and unless some outrageous bid comes in, we won't sell him and he won't want to leave.

Most likely scenario in January is that West Ham or Villa offer us about £20m and Tony spits out his glass of Chateauneuf Du Pape laughing..... before telling them to go **** themselves.

But yes, the thought did cross my mind that I was able to at least tick off "See Lamptey/Lallana play for Brighton in the flesh" at the Chelsea friendly.

I’m hoping he’s got a sensible agent who’ll see the benefit of seeing his man develop for a couple years at Brighton ...he’s very young ..plenty of time to move to a ‘big’ club...in the meantime what’s with the gloves!

I suspect there is a hefty sell-on close if he does get snapped up

We still haven't sold a first choice player to anyone since July 2014 (Ulloa to Leicester)

Sadly I think you're right, more likely the summer than January, even more so if he manages to break into the Euro squad.

We were talking at work the other day, I'd go as far as saying he's the only player, to date, that will get close to Mark Lawrenson as the greatest player to pull on an Albion shirt.

Well, quite. And when was the last time we sold a first choice player in mid-season? It must be well over a decade ago now.

As much as we sound off on here, I think we mostly recognise that our club is probably one of the best run clubs in the country, which is why it punches above its weight in terms of league position and continues to grow. One clear aspect of good management is to be in such a financial position that we can insist players are not allowed to leave before an adequate replacement can be found, but equally that our players will be allowed to leave to progress their careers but not to the detriment of the club. This is how we manage to attract players like Lamptey in the first place.

Wan Bissaka played 1 full season for Palace as a 19/20 year old right back and was their player of the season with a string of great performances. He was then sold in the summer to Man Utd for silly money - £45m
He's still yet to make his England debut but he's pretty much been ever present for Man Utd - if you're looking for a precedent.

the last time was Liam Bridcutt and Ashley Barnes in Jan 2014.

Ah I'd forgotten about Bridcutt. Went to Sunderland to be with Poyet didn't he?

The case of Ashley Barnes was different though - he was shipped out after that time he tripped up the referee and got a lengthy ban. Not sure Poyet wanted him after that.

I seem to recall that it was alluded to that Tariq has got a hefty sell on clause as part of the deal with Chelsea. If we only pick up - for example - half of any fee, TB is not going to be in any rush to sell and as he wants to play football, I'd imagine we will get a minimum of a year and probably more.

Whilst we often trot out that we haven't sold a player we do not wish to when these discussions come round, I'll be amazed if that continues with both Lamptey and Ben White. That's before we get to the likes of Alzate and Bissouma who look like players who could develop further and end up in a European team as well as the crop of young players who could be anything. Surely it won't be long before that trend is broken?

We won't sell unless Tariq really wants to go.
Seems a sensible lad who believes in himself.

I'm not sure which teams would be offering terms that would be seriously tempting to him.
I suspect a big increase in salary is on the cards for next season anyway.
He's been at a top 6 club already, so he won't be swayed by the idea of playing for a big club.

Playing for Brighton has given him the game time and exposure he wanted.
He will know he isn't the finished article yet and a second season with us, will be as useful to his career as anyone else at this stage.

Didn't Barnes go under Garcia as we dithered over a contract? We got in that crap Spanish forward to replace him whose name I've forgotten but had a song that was based on the Conga.

Play him thru the middle up top with Dan Burn (just for the comedy value).

Serious face... Playing for an exciting innovative coach at a progressive football club with a whopping new deal (undoubtedly) in the offing. If he carries on like he is he will go to a monster footballing giant - but not yet. Remember, Tony Bloom's our chairman and Lamptey will only go when it's good for him and us.

Won't go anywhere in January.

At the end of the season the consideration will simply be cost/benefit (to us). How happy is he? What's the offer? What can we counter? If we get a silly money bid from a team in the Champions League who are going to double his wages and guarantee him a start I imagine he'll go with our blessings. Ditto if we go down. If we've had a reasonably good season, he's continuing to progress as a player, and is first choice starter and the offers coming in are average we'll simply improve his contract and keep him. He could (in theory) also get a long term injury or have his form drop off. No one is certain.

What I am certain of is what Wozza said - I've seen him play "in the flesh" :)

The financial side is interesting isn't it. Losses are going to be announced shortly in the region of £40m from what Naylor has said, but it seems unlikely we'll sell in January in the same way we didn't sell Ben White.

The curious thing about Tony's financial position is that nobody knows anything about it! But hopefully it'll mean some of us do seem Lamptey in the flesh
