[Help] Tag watch battery replacement

I'd feel quite brilliant if I got away with charging £94.50 for less than 10 minutes work changing a battery.

Last time I had one changed locally it was about £15 . . .just a work watch.

I don't need reminding about TH mechanical services

Be careful as if you don’t use Tag directly or an authorised partner (even they send it back to Tag) it voids the warranty, I would not trust a Timpson’s with a genuine expensive watch.

My wife's TAG wristwatch has stopped. I made two bold assumptions:
1) The battery has run out after several years.
2) Replacement through a TAG retailer would be expensive.
Decided to enquire at my local Timpson outside of Tesco. To my surprise, as long as I don't need to maintain underwater integrity and general waterprooficity they will oblige for just £94-50.
Hmmm. I'm sure that's probably £200 or more cheaper than the TAG stockist, but with the waterproof caveat and the low end provider, I'm not sure if I want to skimp on the job. Any watch aficionados have any suggestions?

When I had a TAG it used to skip tick every 4 seconds when the battery was low. If it just stopped out of the blue it may be more of an issue, so I'd go down the official avenue.

There's a bloke in St Nics market that does my TAG every 4 years. Last time I went it was £10.

A train to Bristol (where St Nics market is) will cost you over £100 though...

However the moral of the story is do not pay more than £20 (Brighton weighting applied)

I have a golf tag hauer watch which I bought with small legacy from mums passing which has been back to the manufacturer to have the firmware and app updated. For the amount I paid, it’s a bit dissatisfying but it’s seems fixed now.

My Tudor went wrong and was covered under warranty came back after a few weeks and a couple of months later, when out of warranty lost a minute a day. I was told it was out of warranty and I’d have to pay. Was so pissed off that I checked with a small local jeweller who had an old codger who specialised in quality watch repairs. Took a chance with him, paid about £80 four years ago and the watch still keeps time to within a second a day. None of this shitty battery nonsense either it’s self winding

Can’t help feeling designer watch companies are the same as expensive car manufacturers, they bend you over a barrel and effectively rip you off with extortionate rates. Once out of warranty I move on to Indies on cars, they have more enthusiasm and are much cheaper too. Win/Win imo. My watch will be going back to the old codger if he’s still alive

I can't believe Tica in Boundary Road hasn't been mentioned yet (opposite Tesco). He's been there for about a hundred years. I used to send my Gucci away for a battery replacement (via a jewellers) and it would cost me 80-odd squid, plus a 2-3 week wait before getting it back. The bloke in Tica did it for less than a tenner right there and then.

As @Flounce says, designer watch companies are an utter rip-off when it comes to replacing batteries.

My 1915 ladies size pocket watch was serviced 10 years ago for around £50. Still going strong. Plus the £20 I paid for it 5 years earlier, so that's £4.66 a year.

You could try James Ross Jewellers in Portslade. He specialises in watches and I've used him for repairs etc. He would give you a price for a battery swap.
