You can only have a runner if the injury occurs in the match. If he played he'd have to run.

If his ability at the stumps was like Colin Milburn was where he could just slog it could he play and pull up on the first run or chase of the ball and then have a runner/substitue fielder. Do the opponents have to allow this or is it an option that they can refuse.

Two things with that probably. First, the opposition would know he's injured (we know so they'd know) and would not allow him to have a runner. Second, it'd be against the spirit of the sport, which is still quite an important thing in cricket.

Even when I was managing a team I always looked to circumvent rules if they didnt suit me but never broke the rule so out of nature looked at this, thanks for explanation.
