I'm Billy, Hi.

Terrible the things which are going on in Syria, but the hypocrisy of the west and the media is un f***ing believable.
There was a small uprising in Homs due to the Arab Spring, we rush in, arm the rebels, the media brief against Assad and it's turned into a civil war. Here we are again our politicians and media being busy ***** f***ing interfering. All the atrocities you're seeing is due to us arming the rebels, and the Syrian state rightly fighting back. It would've been over by now if we hadn't got involved. Syria was one of the few stable middle eastern countries, not anymore, but any anti-Assad bollocks in the media should be taken with a mountain of salt and I dread to think what we'll end up with, probably another master stroke like someone we've rendered/tortured being in charge like in Libya

You should send your little message to the majority of the Syrian population, then see how popular the government is?

That does not justify arming a rebel force.

There will be a pro American government in place within 5 years.

In the mean time, we will end up with troops on the floor again, I have no doubt.

During the Cold War the west made a lot of enemies by propping up unpopular regimes because they were pro-West. During the Arab Spring, the West seems to have gone completely the other way, supporting popular uprisings that threaten to be massively anti-West. Personally I reckon it's a good call and in the long-term might see a huge shift in relations with the Muslim world, but we'll have to see.

You know for a fact that the majoprity of the population is not happy, or are you taking this view from the media?

Not sure that answers the question. Where are you getting your info from - are you in Syria?

The point thats being made is, nobody really knows whats going on, but our media seems to have decided they do, even though mostly they are reporting from outside Syria.
Assad was a 'friend' of the west for some time, as he kept down the fundamentalists...similer to Hussein. Now, after an uprising of which we know little, but hearing Allah Al Akbar screamed at each shot gives me a bit of a clue, we are suddenly on the side of the 'population'...whoever that may be. Its a civil war...theres two sides in a civil war, so clearly quite a bit of the population is on Assads side.

Living quite close to Syria I know a few Syrians. From what I gather it's mainly the rich Syrians who did very nicely out of Assad that support him. The majprity of the rest don't.

The lead poster also seems to have totally forgotten that Assad's started firing on and shelling the peaceful protests before any armed uprising took place, indeed that's what caused the armed uprising.

I agree that we shouldn't have armed the rebels.
I fear that there almost certainly won't be a pro-American government in place within 5years, it will be either a hardline Islamic state or deeply entrenched in civil war.
I do not think we will have troops on the ground in Syria, although a clandestine SAS action couldn't be ruled out, despite the BBC and other media organisations taking such a partisan stance.

So you because a member of NSC just to post a stupid anti-US/Western post.

We have enough of that type on here already, they at least were here for Albion related chat though.

Why don't you just do one and find some left-wing political board to bore people on?

As long as we stay out of it. Civil wars are civil wars, f*** all to do with us......how we end up arming one side or the other is beyond me... .if somebody should go in, then maybe the French, as its one of their former areas...

and I have no prob with political debate on NSC... if we can have threads concerning how to wipe your arse, then I think current events should also get a look in...they always have in the past.

You're wrong, it will be a Muslim League backed anti American government.

there is no moral argument on either side of the conflict.

Russia, China, and Iran have the biggest influence with the Assad regime, Russia especially has massive arms contracts and a mediteranean naval base in Syria, and thus they veto UN proposals out of self interest, dressing it up as a moral argument of people shouldn't interfere.

The west, try and dress up their side of the argument as a moral one of "attrocities by the Assad regime", but truthfully the goverments don't give a f**k about the people, they want to displace a Moscow favouring goverment with big influence, to a Washington favouring one.

Assad is a dictator and there is no real democracy, but I don't think for 1 minute the outside goverment lines on the conflict are based on anything more than political self interest.

There are humanitarian crisis all over the world, like in Sudan and nobody batters an eyelid as there is no gain from it.
