Attacker is apparently dead. Shot by a lone police woman as he raised the knife against her.

Horrific. Small mercies and of absolutely no use to the people who have lost their lives, but at that time of day in Bondi Junction, if he'd had a gun, he would have killed many many more. I hope the mother of the baby pulls through, unimaginable.

My only thought is could this have been precluded by identification that the person who did this was likely to do it. Someone who does something like this would have a distinct phenotype surely? It's not something a sane person would do on a whim.

Six now with a nine month old baby injured …suspected terrorist …the murderer has been shot dead…just read a report elsewhere…very distressing
Ps terrorist bit since been refuted …all will be revealed in due course I guess….main concern is for those injured….that baby

Apparently she has died. 38 years old. So very, very sad.
Cease to be sane? I'm not sure.
The issue for me is whether it is possible for 'society' to anticipate lethal rogue behaviour. There have been lost of examples where someone who attacks and kills, whether one person or a load, has left a long breadcrumb trail of acting up behind them, whether it be florid psychosis and a history of stopping taking meds, obsessive fundamentalism, obsessive far rightism, or just a history of violence.
We balance efforts to 'anticipate' lethal rogue behaviour with rights and freedoms. That's fine. What disturbs me is when there are obvious red flags that get missed, whether this be killers on a rampage or a couple of toxic 'parents' who abuse their own.
We can't stop every calamity, but I wonder whether we might not be able to anticipate certain cases better. I don't think it has anything to do with police and authorities wanting to 'not offend anyone' (before anyone piles in with that chestnut). More a case of human failings and system failings allowing some rogues to slip through the net. Incompetence, in other words. 'Lessons will be learned' etc.

Horrible news. Authorities are saying he was known to the police, there's no terrorism involved and he didnt target anyone specifically, random attacks. I guess the key question is why was he known to the police? The incident strikes me as the actions of a mentally disturbed, schizophrenic person. I'm sure we will find out soon enough

Yes, it wouldn’t surprise me, insane people often use extremist ideologies as a vehicle to rationalise their motivation for mass killing. That’s why Trump and other politicians who dog whistle to extremist causes are so dangerous- there’s always a nutter with severe mental illness somewhere who will be triggered by it, even if they have no prior engagement with the issues.
Reminds me of an incident my Sister had in the supermarket a few weeks back - a rather large imposing man started screaming behind her that he was going to kill her because she was staring at him (she wasn’t). He was clearly very agitated and started muttering non stop to himself - my Sister left in a real hurry, she was terrified. Staff said they knew him and it was the worse they had seen them. Why are these people not properly medicated/managed but wandering around our communities like a time bomb?
