[Football] Swindon Town - 18th in League Two

Except it wasn't actually 'time-wasting' as the ball was IN PLAY. Casper just stood there with his foot on the ball, while their players stood on the halfway confused as to why he wasn't wellying it down the pitch - and their fans all screamed for a referee / policeman.
That was at Withdean not the Swindon ground. I can't remember who we were playing, but it was hilarious.

Found it. It was against Huddersfield, at their stadium, not Withdean. They would hate Ankergren purely for being a Leeds player previously.

Swindon, but used to be Manila
Swindon Town are up shit creek without a propulsion system, they are under a transfer embargo, no permanent manager an owner who it appears could not care less and facing 2 charges about 'hiding money or something'
I still watch them when we have no game and its like remembering how bad we were in the past.....there for the grace of God ( Tony Bloom)...

Yes Charlie Austin is still on the books and still runs like something is wedged up his jacksy...

Most fans stay loyal but there is a vociferous bunch who want change...

That first game of the season away at Swindon - Matt Sparrow scored 2 and we sang where’s your captain gone for most of it - remember seeing Bloom (I think) going mental in the Directors bit to the side of us when we scored!
What was fun was that Greer was unavailable for that match and got sent off with a 3-game ban for violent conduct halfway through his debut. At that point, it was "Where's our captain gone?"

Also, I looked up that Swindon game and out bench... jeez... Poke, Whing, Battipiedi, Baz, Hart, Dicker, Holroyd. At that point Harty must have been nearly 40, Battipiedi and Baz were total dross, Holroyd looked like a child in a shirt four sizes too big, Whing was firmly displaced by Calderon, and Poke was the bangest of bang average. Only Dicker went on to be a serious success (excluding Hart and Whing, who were already well enough in credit)

They are still outraged that the game at the County Ground in the 76/77 season (I think) got waterlogged off at 1/2 time when they were 4-0 up. IIRC we were already promoted by the time the game was replayed.
I believe we were. Still lost 2-1. Iirc correctly Ward got our goal, and they got the winner in pretty much the last minute. I went to that but I missed the 4-0 abandoned game due to a family party.

The other thing I remember is seeing the word STAB sprayed on places. It apparently stood for Swindon Town Agro Boys.

I've always held a quite irrational dislike for Swindon. It's a crap town in the middle of an otherwise quite attractive county. Every game I've ever been to down there has featured homophobic abuse, which is poor at the best of times but somehow even worse in a West Country accent. They've always fancied themselves as a potentially big club, despite absolutely no evidence to support that delusion. Duncan Shearer was a Swindon player when he smashed Nicky Bissett's leg to pieces back in the day. Mooney, Parkin and the rest got what was coming to them for giving it large in that play off game, and it was delicious.

I'm with David Brent in his views of "the Swindon lot".

I remember Swindon, a premier league team in my adult lifetime. I know our set up is better prepared and all that but I’m sure once they had dreams of being drawn away at Baku in the UEFA cup and stuff like that.
The fickle mistress that’s football eh?
I remember them beating the Arse 3-1 in the league cup final. Deeply amusing :lolol:

I don’t often look at the lower league tables these days (forgotten where we came from) so was shocked to see our old friends Swindon so low. Weren’t they outraged that Gordon Greer had joined a smaller club or something? Or am I misremembering?
I can't recall that but do remember GG saying some time after he joined that he had not realised how big the club was in terms of potential (then) support. I am sure that he does now!

Getting relegated for financial irregularities tells you all you need to know about them.

Yes, thanks. I know that. Hence my comment about "now". I also remember hen he left us describing Brighton as a "special place" -he sounded genuine enough, and I hope that his work for the Albion is rewarding for him -and us!

And who remembers the game ( was it play off first leg 03/04?) They were all over us most of the game and were singing you're just a town full of Nancy's!! Cue chippy scoring a deflected goal and us singing 1 0 to the Nancy Boys. Well that's how I remember it.

Yeah, I remember it. On the way back I left my bag of beer unattended at Swindon Station to go and talk to someone and some bastard nicked it.

……but they’re also only 9 points off the playoffs. The table is mad - only 3 points between 7th and 16th
Swindon's season summed up by thrashing Crawley 6-0 at the start of the season and then losing the return recently in Sussex 3-1

"Fun" Swindon Fact - it was the site of the first ever purpose built railway station cafe (as all the trains on the GWR stopped there).
This led to the first letter of complaint about railway catering, since Brunel himself was so appalled at how shit it was that he felt the need to write in and complain.

Where’s your captain gone? First game away to Swindon 2010/11 season.

This is more my recollection.

This and a very well taken Matt Sparrow brace.
“Where’s your captain gone?”

And a terrific midfield performance from young Jamie Smith, who Poyet raved over afterwards, and who then faded away and basically never played again

Think it was also Ankegren's debut? And he upset the Swindon fans with some comedy timewasting?

Randomly, just one day after this discussion, a rummage through my desk drawers, prompted by a different exchange, has turned up our tickets from this very game 👀
