I've just spoken to my brother who has been working in Swindon today. He can't see any reason why the game won't be played - unless things get very much worse.

If they're going 'down' to get from Brighton to Swindon, they're going the wrong bloody way.

When visiting the west country I always say going 'down to the west country' dont most people?

Quite possibly. But Swindon isn't in the West Country. I always think of the place as the gateway to the South Midlands.

Isnt Wiltshire a west country county? Anywhere down the M4 from London must be down because everybody from the south, south west and south east go up to London.

That's as logical as saying Anywhere down the M6 from Carlisle must be down because everybody from the south, south west and south east goes up to Carlisle.

If you are travelling from Carlisle it is. What do most people from this area say when travelling westwards on the M4? They say they are going down the M4 and then up it when they are returning. I do and I am sure that I am not alone by any stretch of the imagination.
If you're going up, you're going up.
From Brighton/Sussex, pretty much everywhere (certainly Swindon) is 'up'.

People up north say they are "going up" to London which is very confusing.

When I lived in Brighton I used to say I was 'going down to Wales', now I live in Wales I say I'm 'going down to Brighton'....I think its just a figure of speech....although I don't remember ever using that phrase much going other places.....wierd!!!

I suspect all this up and down business predates cars and originates from the railways - "up" trains are those going to or toward London, "down" trains are those travelling away from London.
....But this is of course of absolutely no help in deciding whether the game is on or off!

Anything further North than Brighton is going up in my book. However alomng the coast West is going down to. e.g going down to Portsmouth or Plymouth. But definitely you go up to Swindon.
Currently in Longleat though but as it's still South of Swindon I will still be going up to Swindon. Or perhaps "popping up" to Swindon as it's only a short distance. Curiously if I go East to Dover for example I say I am going along to Dover, not down or up.

Over night temparatures are minus 5. The question is whether their ground thaws better than ours, I suspect it does. And therefore the game will be on.
I doubt the Leyton Orient game will be though, especially with a 1pm kick off.
