Anyone had this? Very unpleasant and painful. Currently on day 6 of prescription ear drops plus amoxicillin and it's still hanging in there.

I thought swimmers ear was when you got water trapped in the ear canal. I’ve had that a few times, but decongestants and holding the nose and blowing have always seemed to sort it.

6 days on amoxy sounds nasty!

I’ve had swimmers ear due to narrow ear canals. if you do swim a lot and have issues, see if you can make an appointment to see your GP and then ask if you can be refered to their audiologist. As I have a dodgy right ear now (pardon..) I was about 8 years ago given made to measure ear plugs for swimming. They were supposed to charge me £50, but I received two pairs and the original moulds free.

I had it 15 years back. Awful searing pain through the ear canal. Lasted weeks. Never turn my head underwater now without wearing ear plugs and cap.

Never really understand swimmers ear, you get it then nurse tells you to keep ear dry plus oiling, go back two weeks later and they pour gallons of water down your ear..

Isn’t that what they do when you have a build up of ear wax?

I had my ears syringed when I was about 9-10 years old and the amount that came out was something else. Was an amazing feeling to suddenly be able to hear clearly again after such a gradual long-term buildup of wax in both ears. I felt like I’d be able to hear an ant farting.

I have surfer's ear which I manage by having bespoke earplugs from this company https://surfplugs.co.uk/. Every surfer I know over the age of 50 has it.

I got the plugs made after a bit of blutac I was using got detached and stuck in my ear. I'd had a few holidays spoiled by getting water stuck in an ear then having to get antibiotics.

If you don't sort it in the early stages, it's a grim prospect of getting your ears drilled (normally involving cutting round the back of the ear first to expose the cavity). It's very common in Australia and surfier parts of the UK. And shepherds on the moors get it as well. Google it for some gruesome photos.

If you're lucky, your GP may refer you to audiology at the County and get them to do the plugs, although the ones I got weren't as good fit as the Surplugs.

Yeah I used to get swimmers ear. I used to use Earol Swim Spray and it works really well. I now use Mack's Pillow Soft Silicone Earplugs because the water was causing me to get dizzy and these stop the water going into the ear completely

Can I just say that I love getting rid of ear wax. I go for the 3 day olive oil soak and then I have a red plastic ketchup bottle filled with warm water witith a thin nozzle. I have a picture on my phone of a giant bit I got out photographed alongside a pound coin.
Have I gone too far ?
